Bad Breathing Problem

Recommended Posts

alright, well, I've been smoking for several years, this is def. kind of a recent thing. so let me break it down and see everyone's opinions on it.

basically, about 3 times in the last year, (tonight being one) ill have been smoking, and up out of no where start having a really bad shortness of breath. almost as if, its not that my airways are blocked, but like there is something in my lungs taking up space. itll eventually lead to my ribs hurting from my chest expanding and contracting at such great intervals. and by the time the ordeal is over im fucking exhausted.. like about ready to pass out.

this usually starts off pretty mild, and by the time i catch that its going to be a problem, its already too late. its just an uphill battle staying on top of it (robotussin seems to help) it keeps me up the whole night and frankly worries the shit out of me.

what i want to know is, what causes it?

i dont believe its just smoking thats doing it. some days ill have smoked 6+ bowls a day, and been fine, whereas on days like today, i only smoked twice, and they both of my sessions were an hour or two apart... and im killing myself trying to breathe.

the most like thing i can configure is that it might be CO poisoning.. because today it didnt happen until me and my roommate started up a bowl of DA and Bahraini. and just smoked our asses off in a closed room with the vents closed. (its his thing, not something i do very often) and here i am five hours later almost in a panic. also i use naturals for anyone that would ask.

thanks for any help guys.

Well it depends what you're smoking. Here's a question for you, have you ever been tested for red dye allergy?

It also depends on the red dye used, there are plenty of variations of red dyes and some might be causing a reaction and others aren't. I would check into that. Also maybe check into some sort of situational asthma? I'm not sure, this is something best left to a physician. I know that a inhaler would most likely clear up your symptoms relatively fast. I was prescribed one when I had my walking Pneumonia.

yeah, i looked up the symptoms for it though, and theyre pretty spot on... so it def makes sense... regardless it sucks, bc AF is one of my favorites

It's obviously not a serious serious allergy or else you're entire chest would tighten up to the point where you had to go to the hospital. When it happens, I recommend taking a small dose of benadryl or non-drowsy allergy medicine, see how that helps!

well one night it kicked my ass, the second time it happened (a few months back) and i literally was struggling to breathe.. but i really try to avoid the hospital, i dont feel like being in debt forever. so i loaded myself up on benadryl and robotussin, rubbed some vics on my chest, and slobbed on one of those super cooling cough drops and it cleared it right up. last night i just took some robo and it helped enough to put me to sleep. chest still hurts though.

Sounds like you should be checked for allergies as others have mentioned. Also 6 bowls in a day, how long does each bowl last? That is quite a bit of smoking.

Do you take breaths and relax in between hits? Or do you just chief it constantly til the end?

well i only pack probably 2-3 max, but both of my roommates and my gf smoke too... so its just always around me. and i pace myself, im usually the one getting on my gfs ass about chain smoking it.

I'm still leaning towards an allergy, this definitely is a tell-tale sign of a reaction. If it were the smoking it would be a chronic problem that consistently happens ALL THE TIME. Take a look at older cig smokers for example. This is situational which really points at allergies. I would get it tested and maybe even get a shot for it, that way you can smoke in peace for about a year before you need another shot :)

I say get yourself checked out, mention it to your Dr. and see about seeing an allergy specialist or w/e they're called. It sounds like an allergy, but it could be something else too, see a professional and go from there. But I'd recommend cutting back on smoking and avoiding dyed tobacco's until you know for sure..

shrimp have nothing to do with spring :D get yourself allergy checked, you never know how bad it could get if you had a seizure or something when home alone etc. and once you specify the cause you can stay safe and smoking :D

you know now that I think about it, CO poisoning however mild could cause an asthma seizure... cause youre inhaling through the pipe hard and not getting as much oxygen as you would be had it been air... could make your body go asthma mode. Just visit the doctor tho, nobody here can really help :P

well i know its not asthma, i work out almost every day, except lately, and even then im working 8hrs a day maintenance at mcdonalds, which is pretty physical... and as for the last several bowls since this post nothing has gone wrong. although i noticed a tickle in my throat like it was going to start when i was smoking citrus with mint (fucking horrible AF premix flavor) which i noticed was a lighter dye than the rest.. idk. 99% of the time im fine, but shit happens i guess. ive limited myself to a bowl or two a day, maybe that will help. granted i did read up on some of the allergies related to it, even that it isn't something that affects you all the time, the allergy to it only hits once in a while anyways. but this has only happened 3 times in about 4 years of constantly smoking AF... also my lifestyle until the last month was fucking terrible, im talking ramen if im lucky and almost a case of dew a day. now im eating salads and shit for lunch at work, and drinking straight water and gatorade. unlrelated, but caffeine withdrawals suck ass by the way.

Even if you're active you can still have asthma. But it sounds like this could have been CO poisoning, I'd think an allergy would happen everytime you smoked what you were smoking.

Make sure you smoke in a well ventilated area and the coals are fully lit. and take breaks between puffs.

I'd still bring this up when you talk to your Dr. next

lol well im poor and dont feel like adding debt to that... so a dr is a very very very rare occasion, i just went to one for the first time since i was like 3 so i could get a hydrocodone prescription for my wisdom tooth which is like dying.. but like i said ive been pacing myself a little better and work doesnt allow me to smoke as much as i used to. like 1-2 bowls a day for me now, so thats helping. also i understand the asthma gig, but i really dont think i have it, now that i bust ass all day and when i do work out were talking like a 4000 calorie+ a day diet just to maintain my weight, its possible, but just unlikely. and yeah mush, ive never had headaches like this. im glad i never got into drugs bc this shit is kicking my ass

Lifestyle and asthma are related obviously, but a healthy lifestyle doesnt exclude asthma completely, just saying, though if you dont have a history of asthmatic issues etc. its most likely not it.
