Tangiers Help!

Recommended Posts

For starters, I spent a decent amount of time with trial and error, as well as sifting through the forums and even the wiki...

I've got medium phunnel and the mod for it (though it seems hit or miss with the mod). I can not get it to smoke with out burning my throat. I've watched the vids and people seem to be using 3 or even 4 of the Japanese coals on a medium sized phunnel. For me, I'm hacking my lungs out with 2! Not to mention no flavor whatsoever.... Just to be sure, I spread out all my tangiers tobacco (root beer, cinnamon and clove) on some tin foil last night to let it acclimate. So it was out for probably 10 hours. What I would have thought would be more than enough time. They smell, similar to the flavor I was expecting, though the root beer is VERY faint...

I've tried 2 different techniques for packing, one were I just sort of drop it in with out really packing it, and I've tried packing it in there with my thumb, not too hard - what snoopy reccomended on the wiki page. Same result. Its driving me nuts cause I keep hearing about the amazing flavors from tangiers, and I'm getting crap! Help!

for starters, dont use mod with tangiers, it will only hurt you.

Second, try packing a whole lot in there.

once you have a bunch in there, put in a lot more, cause you dont have that much, trust me people always think they have a lot and its nothing.

Make a good number of holes (not pin sized, i use a toothpick)

make sure your coals are fully lit glowing red and place them (2-3 of them) on kinda the edges of the bowl.

Hope this helps!

and browse more before you post ANOTHER tangiers topic we already have about 300000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

I did! I found a lot of references on how to set it up and I followed them to the letter, I'm just trying to figure out what I did wrong...

How many coals you putting on? Take a pic. Are you overpackin the bowl? Take a pic

I went thru alot to finally get tangiers to smoke right. Now that i do, i feel i can best help those that dont know how.

Pics would really really really really help solve your problem

Take Pics of:

- packed bowl (a couple so we can really tell how well you packed it)
- foil on bowl w/ holes poked
- Coal on bowl

I don't have one of me packing it (still a little light headed to pack another bowl...)

lots of holes, 3 japanese coals, obviously they've burnt out a bit, but you get the idea. After I first started, and I nearly choked to death, i pulled the coals off for a while then put them back on... It burnt to the point that I could smoke it without dying, but the flavor was somewhat lacking and it was still a bit harsh... How are people starting with 3 even 4 coals? I get the whole 'its burning' bit, thanks for that... it just tasted like I was smoking a log.... If I try it again later I'll try and take some pics of packing it.

I dunno, it was pretty packed... I have the mod, but I wasn't using it in that bowl. And given the results I've been getting, 4 coals just sounds like a recipe for disaster... but since everyone else is using that many, clearly I'm doing something wrong...

Before you put the foil on how much does the tangiers sit above the rim of the bowl. Should be around 1/8 inch above the rim when you put the foil on.

Thats probably about what I'm doing, give or take. When I put the coals on it starts to sizzle.

the sizzle is pretty natural for any shisha, it always does that when the coal is going good.

No mod, pack shisha just a bit over the top of the bowl, let the baccy just sit dont pack it down. Then put foil on push the foil down w your palm and then wrap foil around the bowl. Make alot of big holes. Place coals (remember tangiers takes less heat than other bowls, and ur good to go.

  • 2 weeks later...
I think I'm giving up... I tried blackthorn today, packed just the way everyone suggested, used 3 kings this time no mod, split the coals up, kept them moving around, started on the edges, super thick smoke, very harsh, no flavor, damn near passed out (was afraid to get up for a while...)

sigh...

as far as I can tell, i'm doing everything right. I've had some of my roommates try and they agree, no flavor, thick, harsh, etc. So much for that I guess....

The method that worked best for me was the fork method. Pack a lot of tobacco in there just loosely sitting like an inch above the rim. Take a fork and from the center of the bowl press the fork on the tobacco and pull out towards the rim of the bowl until you get it nice and packed.

This worked best: http://hookahforum.wikidot.com/tangiers:packing-scoop

Its the COALS! Wow, I was thinking that the whole time. I have those coals as well, they put off a SHIT TON of heat. You need to break the quarters in half and use 2 of those. I'm serious, they put off a lot of heat. If you arent getting enough smoke, put on 3 of the half of a quarters. Saw into the piece of coal till you're about half way through then twist the knife and it should break clean.

I would say you don't have enough tobacco in the bowl, but three Easy Lites should be right. Try putting more tobacco in the bowl. The symptoms you are describing are underpacked bowl syndrome.
