Restoring Vintage Brass Hookah

Recommended Posts

So, a few weeks ago I posted a vintage hookah find in the craigs list thread. I picked it up a few days ago for 35. I know its full brass because of the magnet test, and I was looking for some more help on what to do to clean it up, as well as if someone could fully identify it for me.

To clean, I have been letting it soak in a bath mix of Hot water, baking soda, vinegar, and some lemon juice. After letting it soak, I would scrub it, add some baking soda to the rough spots, and then spray either vinegar or lemon juice on it, let it fizz for a minute, and scrub some more. I have repeated this about 4 times so far, and have a can of brasso ready to go. At this point, there are spots that I am not sure if they will make it out or not and if I should just start using the brasso.

I also need to get some JB Weld for a few small spots, should I use that after I brasso, or before?

I have shown it to a friend who knows hooka's pretty well, and he thinks it is an old KM due to the stamps on the hose port, though the ash tray and tray holder do not have the "typical" KM markings, but for all I know, at the time it was made they could have been.

Well, here is the whole album, I wont post all the pictures I took. This has both the before, and current ones

Ok so first, here are the pictures of the hose ports with the markings on them. There are a mix of both before and after, this is more to help with the identification.

Here is the Ash Tray. Its hard to make out, its pretty worn down, but it seems like some sort of flower design. Ironically, its almost easier to make it out from the bottom of the tray.It seems like there was some other image stamped in, but again, its hard to make out. It was still wet in some of the pictures from the soaking. I had not really focused on cleaning this yet.

Sorry for mega post, just trying to show what I have done, get some advice, and some answers as to who is the maker of her! I really think that at the end of it all I will be able to get her looking great.

Probably A makers brand seems like its been marked. Most likely Worth a lot of money to collectors like myself. Hass should be able to tell you who made it. The name is on the hose port It seems I could be wrong however. The vase looks common to the late 80's Edited by S3cretz

I am very sure that the vase was a replacement, positive almost. Once I find out who the maker of it is I want to get a more fitting vase and hose, assuming its a KM, fingers crossed.

Thats probably not a KM. By the look of it its better anyway. Now that I look at it in more detail see alot of similarities between it and the small sultan. In terms of markings not shape. Edited by S3cretz

Hmm I dunno, we will find out hopefully for sure!

Here are pictures of the whole hookah, not taken by me though. These were the ones provided by the seller before I did any work to it.

Defiantly not its vase but the vase is worth a bit too mind you. 2 of the three hookahs it would originally have come with Can be seen under the Hubblyshack collection thread milky hookahs 3 and 1st from the right.

Yea I cant wait to smoke out of it, still have some work to do though! The only real backing I have of it being a KM is that a few people have said that just from the style of the older ones, and a friend thought that the hose port stamp was the old short hand spelling of Khalil Mamoon.

hm hm hm... The lounge I go to has a hookah of a similar design, old brass baby, the bowl it came with was brass too, full brass old egyptian. Its the owners so if I go by there today ill ask him about it and take a picture!

That would be great! The only thing I did not get was a bowl, came with a hose I will never use, and that vase even though its not original. I think the hose ports and tray rest would help the most.

Hass or Antouwan will definitely be able to help you ID it. Either way, it's definitely an old quality-looking Egyptian rig that I find worth of cleaning up and polishing. Do the JB Weld first, then polish that baby up!

Yea I really want to finish restoring it, I think my issue at this point is the spots I have left...will I be able to get them fully off or are they are on there for good? Will the brasso clean as well, or just polish?

Getting more excited to see what it actually is? Chrees, do you have an opinion on it at all?

^Well there you go! Hass, you're the man!

The Brasso will help clean those spots, trust me. It'll clean and make her shine like no other... Just make sure to rub it a lot with some force to remove the crap. Wax on, wax off!

It's an Awlad Sarhan اولاد سرحان a rather well known Egyptian producer (the name means Sarhan Sons)

Thank you!! So ok, can you tell me a few more things? What era do you think this is from? Is the vase original or replaced? And not that I would use it but the hose as well? And last, the value?

And I will grab some of the JB on the way home, apply it, and will hit the brasso after it dries! Edited by Floataround

Before you put jb weld in that crack you might want to try to braze it with a brass filler rod. Its pretty easy to do. Just get some flux for brazing, a torch and some filler rods. There are a TON of youtube videos out there that can show you how to braze.

Hmm I will look into that. There is also another small holecrack right above the hose port at the heart of the stem...what do you think will be better for that? The JB or the brazing? Keep in mind, brazing might still be out of my world anyway. Plus, JB cost me about 5 dollar,s not sure how much all of that would cost. I am trying to stay cost efficient.

They will both work, depends on how good you want it to look. Brazing with what they do to attach all of the ports, people call them "welds" but there really brazes(?). Brazing will cost more but it will look 100 times better imo. It will be all brass, not brass with globs of gray jb weld on it.
