Public Smoking?

Okay Im in Rock Hill, SC at Winthrop University, I know "technically" its legal but Im skittish about smoking in public so help me reassure myself that its legal and that I wont go to jail for it, please?

There is no way you're gonna get arrested for it. Depends on your school policy but smoking in public, at my school, at least 20 ft from a building is completely allowed. However at my school, you are not allowed to store or use a hookah in or around a res hall. If you're slick about keeping a pipe in your room and take it outside in the general campus, you'll have no problems. I've seen people smoking a nice Social Smoke pipe in one of my school's many quads and no one ever gives them shit.

Hey dude,

I'm a criminal justice major and I can tell you for a fact that you won't get in trouble. I smoke out with my friends all the time and rarely ever are we even confronted by officers.
There was an occasion where one was being a complete "bag" and tried to take it from us because its paraphenaila. We explained it to him and showed him the bowl, water, and shisha and he let us go back about our business.
Just make sure all you're smoking is tobacco and you've got nothing to worry about.

I'm sick of seeing perfectly nice people feeling guilty for smoking indoors (in a smoking lounge) or near other people. The anti-smoking lobby is full of shit...I think we should all be considerate of other people, but don't suck shit from them, either. Its possible to do both.

Out of respect I always ask an employee of the store I want to smoke outside of if its ok with them. So far they have all said its cool just dont make a mess.

i smoked on the beach last weekend, Assateague Island in MD if anyone is familiar with it, and the park ranger came and yelled at us for the campfire we built on the ground and pretty much ignored the hookah. i was all ready to start explaining and he was like "(points at hookah) thats fine (points at campfire) but that has to be put out."

smoked at ucla, a community college here, coffee beans, starbucks.

the only time i got shit for it was when we smoked at this organic yuppie cafe. these 3 bitches next to us kept fake coughing and talking about how it smells...as if i was about to stop. however, since then that actual place (urth cafe) has banned smoking, even outdoors on their property. haven't been there since so i haven't pushed the limits or confirmed this. This is shitty
Whenever I go out for a public hookah seshie I ALWAYS get hassled into taking my stuff and leaving.
I've never smoked in a restaurant; the manager either just said no when I asked him or
if I took the liberty of sparking up, I was told to leave shortly afterwards.
I smoked in a parking lot and got kicked out by security guards.

The only time I've ever had a good seshie in a place other than a house was when I went to a private park near my house.
Even then I got hassled, but thankfully one of the owners knew a thing or two about hookah and let us stay.

I'm not sure about the public smoking laws in South Africa, but I've had some pretty shitty experiences. Edited November 5, 2007 by Cheese//

the only times i've had problems was when i used to smoke in public parks "after hours". The cops always made a big deal of the park being "closed" (how the hell do you close a park!?!). they always asked what we were smoking and a few times asked us to take the foil off, but they were more concerned that the park was "closed" than the fact that we were smoking

Last time I smoked in public was at the Halo 3 launch party at the local Gamestop. Sat on the sidewalk right outside with some friends, lit it up with no problems from anyone.

Right before midnight (thirty minutes or so later), a couple cops came by to make sure everything was going smooth. They came up to us, asked what it was, if there was any marijuana in it, and if any of us were drunk. After answering "a hookah, nope, nope" they simply replied "okay, have a nice night" and walked off.

I've gotten hassled a few times at my house (neighbors called the cops) They are usually fairly cool about it, but I live in student district of the city, so I assume they run into it a lot. Every time they come, just look at the pipe, ask if it is marijuana, and leave after I verify it is not. I have yet to smoke anywhere like parking lots, because my city has loitering laws, which I'm sure any jerk would pull to yank my chain. I have smoked on the beach off of Park Point on Lake Superior a few times.

Smoking hookah outside on a nice day is one of the most enjoyable ways to smoke. Sure smoke rings arent as plausable out doors (wind). But you should be fine, as long as you are respectful and nice.
