Packing Nakhla In A Turkish Bowl

Recommended Posts

Ever since I bought my first Elmas I was intrigued by the Turkish bowl. It isn't very wide but is extremely deep. Hassouni eventually convinced me to try it as he said most traditional tobaccos taste better in them. So I decided to try it and after a few goes at it, I had success and haven't looked back since.

1.) I drop chunks of tobacco around the edges of the bowl.

2.) Use a fork to press the tobacco against the wall of the bowl. Go all the way around and press hard so it is squished tightly against the wall of the bowl. This will help decrease gaps and air pockets in the bowl and reduce chances of burning.

3.) After you have the ring as shown above, sprinkle some tobacco into the middle of the bowl then press it down somewhat hard until all of the tobacco does not give anymore and is pressed flush against the bottom of the bowl. After this you will see that the ring is higher with tobacco than the first drop of tobacco into the center of the bowl.

4.) Now do a second set of sprinkling so it reaches above the bowl.

5.) Then use a fork to press on top of the tobacco and pull towards theedges of the bowl to make the shisha flush with the ring you made.

6.) Toothpick holes all the way through with mizo, and just through the foil with og. Since mizo is juicy you need to poke holes all the way through and down through the bowl holes. Then use a skewer to press through the holes of the bowl from the bottom to clear up tobacco stuck inside the holes. (credit goes to hass for the skewer idea)

7.) For coals I light 3 coals, put two on to start, then after a couple rounds I put the third coal on top of the 2 forming a pyramid. Then after about 30 minutes I drop the third coal on the bowl and windcover it. I get an hour and a half with og and a little longer with mizo, and that is with constant smoking non stop 4-5 people. For a better idea on density the bowls hold anywhere from 25-30g of tobacco.

Thanks for all the credits, John, but I must admit my technique is just "slap that shit in there pretty dense and have at it"  :)

I wonder if this would work with Egyptian or Syrian bowls .....

Are there any female Turk bowls?? I'm too lazy to get on Google and look at the moment.

Thanks for the tip there, will have to try this out. Edited by Nerdy

Probably, I would think it works best in the turk bowls though because their shape causes you to sometimes leave a gap of space between the bowl and the tobacco because of the way the sides of the bowl come straight down and flare out then back in if you know what I mean. With a typical sloped Egyptian bowl that gap doesn't seem to really happen because when you sprinkle the tobacco it fills in the edges naturally because of the slope.

I'm with Hass in that I just dump it in and don't really worry too much with it, but I'll be sure to try this method soon. Just got some new Nakhla flavors in that I need to try out. :)

Just dumping it in never worked for me in the Turk bowls. It worked in a phunnel and egyptian, but just dumping it in the turk bowls I always found the edges of the bowl were never packed tight enough and I always tasted coal in my bowls.

sprinkle in something like a cm or 2 above the edge, just put the tobacco in slowly not in one big dump if youre worried that you wont fill up the bowl completely, then press down flush with the edge and foil. zero effort :P

I don't worry about not filling the bowl completely, I just find when you sprinkle it in, you have to press the tobacco against the sides of the bowl or else it tastes burnt and doesn't smoke as nicely.

true story.

That technique from OP is very similar to how I pack Tangiers in a Egyptian.
