Raziel510
In terms of the actual physics of it, how does a phunnel bowl used without a mod allow you to heat up the shisha and smoke it through a hookah? with the mod I understand that the airflow is directed through the shisha to the bottom and then goes down the main hole but without the mod, it seems like the heated airflow would just go straight from the coals to the main hole in the pipe without touching any of the shisha at all. I was just wondering if someone could explain to me how it works.
rootdown
Aloha!i have been using a phunnel for a couple of years(never got a mod) and you put the coals on the outer rim over the shisha, if you pack it snug but not TIGHT it shouldnt be a problem. it has always worked great for me as ive been using it for so long and have my technique dialed in, so i never upgraded
Bulldog_916
The mod is mostly for shisha conservation. But phunnels are so good you can come to a bowl a day later and fire it back up no problem. I wouldnt even hassle with the mod personally. I dont think it is necessary for a good smoke.
hookah hippie
basically the tobacco needs to be decently packed and then the coals heat it up like in a standard bowl but then when you draw on the hookah it sucks the smoke down the single hole in the bowl and allows you to smoke

It would seem that the heat from the coals goes right under the foil, above the shisha, and down the hole. But it must work somehow or else they wouldn't be so popular. Can't wait to try mine. imfantabulous
The physics behind it is called radiant heat, it doesn't matter what the air flow is doing, drawing in through the hose creates a low pressure vacuum that draws air from everywhere it can, including through the shisha. The shisha does not need to actually touch the coals to produce smoke, i have a bowl that can produce thick plumes of smoke even though the foil is about 2 inches from the tobacco. Haven't you noticed that when you pull the bowl off the stem it burns your hand (not all the time obv)? thats due to radiant heat heating up the entire bowl.As a side note, putting one giant hole in the center of your phunnel and none around it would cause all the air to go through the center and you would get minimal smoke. mattarios2
it smokes great, no need for a mod unless you really wanna conserve shisha
