I generally use around 4-7 ice cubes and I get really nice clouds. It also highly depends on what brand of shishah you are using.Romman has very nice clouds,Al-Waha and Havana in my opinion are kinda shady.

Heat management is the key here. Adjusting the number of coals, their position, and the use of a wind cover all contribute. Using cold water (i.e. adding ice cubes to the vase) will do some to make the smoke more dense as well. The brand of tobacco can make a difference as well, but it has been my experience that if you know what you're doing, you can get great clouds out of almost any type.

Keep experimenting. Best of luck!

Cover the bowl with coals, stack like a wedding cake till the bowl cannot hold any more. Get an extra tall windcover with a fan blowing air through the top of the cover down to the bowl. This with yield the thickest smoke ever.

Now, if you want it to be good, disregard my comment can listen to the above posters.

There's only one way to get thick smoke that is safe for humans, and it's the same way that humans have been making thick smoke since the stone age: Controlled heat and wet material.

How do you get lots of smoke for a signal fire? Burn fresh timber that is very moist.
How do you get lots of smoke for smoking meat? Wet wood chips in controlled heat.
How do you get lots of smoke in a shisha? Wet shisha in controlled heat.

Here's the best way to get that controlled heat: use a quality hookah, quality coals, and quality bowl
Use a good, wet shisha like AF or Potion

Check out codename's videos. He gets those thick clouds by using quality components, controlling the heat, and using the wettest shishas.
