Auto Seal Vs. Traditional

I have hurd that it is hard to pull through auto seal hookahs. How hard really is it? I am looking more for a auto seal two hose for me and a friend when he is over so when we play video games we don't have to have our fingers over it. But if it really that hard then I can just get a one hose. But the one I have on back order right now has auto seal and I am just wondering if it really worth it or if you can drag fine through it with little differance. Thanks

go for the auto seal.or you could get a traditional and load some glass bead type things, you can find them at a craft store..etc and make your own auto seal

I personally don't like the auto-seals. In my experience they're somewhat harder to drag from (though that might just be the hookah, not the auto-seal). I personally bought a 3-hoser with no autoseals and love it. I find that when people have to hold their fingers over the tip it's more of a social experience, as you all depend on the others to hold their thumbs over the tips.

There is no better or worse, just personal preference really. If you're going to be playing videogames or something and want to be able to not bother holding a hose, you could always get a non-autoseal and have a flip-cap for the tips... might even work better than an auto-seal does, and is even cheaper + easier to replace.

i have never really liked the auto seal, just because it has a different feel to it and the hookahs ive smoked out of it feels like the ball bearing is moving up and down. it's really not a big deal to most people. I would recommend you get the auto-seal and sometimes that just means they send you ball bearings in a little baggy along with your hookah that you put in (thats how it was for mine). But if you get the chance replace them with 6mm plastic airsoft bb's so they wont ever rust on you. Also sometimes with auto seal hookahs it doesn't seal as well as it would with your finger over it, but it probably wont be that big of a deal with your two hose. You might just want to get flip caps there only $.50 or so, and then you can decide what you like better Edited April 2, 2008 by Abaco

I like autoseal, because a lot of my friends are sto**rs and a lot of the rest are stupid, and they don't always catch on to non-autoseal hookahs and I end up having to jump up and down on the couch screaming PLUG YOUR FUCKING HOSE YOU GIMPY BASTARD over and over and that's just inconvenient and sort of antithetical to the whole hookah smoking experience.

What I do with my 3-hose auto-seal Syrian Glyph, is remove the ball bearing from one valve, so that when I'm smoking it alone or with people that can I figure can basically kiss my ass, I can smoke through a non-sealed valve with no added difficulty. People that can kiss my ass then don't have to worry about plugging the hose, and I don't have to strain my voice or break my couch.

i had that problem when i got my new hookah. now all my friends that i smoke with know to cover or thumb the tip

I don't think the auto seals are that big of a pain to pull...I think they are well worth it. If you are smoking alone, take the bead out of your hose and keep the other bead in.

Auto seal!

There isn't a difference at all. Except you may here the glass bearing rumble a little. I have a three hoser with three razan hoses and it hits as hard as anything. I like the fact that when i need new coals or have to go piss or go let some one in I don't have to find some one to cover my hose or what not. Plus because people can come and go and set the hose down I feel like there is less of a chance of it getting knocked over.

Im on the fence about auto seals, I got an Egyptian from HS which now has auto seal. The pull is just fine for me, but I also replaced the metal ball bearing with a plastic bb which was the same size. This may affect the pull, but all in all doesnt feel any different from any other hookah I have smoked. It is also great for the reason you dont need to thumb it and with the cobra heads it can be a bit weird.

The reason I dont like the auto seal it some times get stuck open and you dont even know it which then affects the pull for the other person using the hose.

I own a 2 hose with auto seal and recently acquired my 4 hose with no auto seal. Personally I prefer no auto seal after smoking them both , but I am sure it is merely personal preference.

one thing i like about mya's you don't have to commit... just change out the adapter from traditional to autoseal.

I had a traditional, bought a couple house plugs for 50 cents.

I haven't smoked an autoseal, but I LOVE THE IDEA ... I WILL FIND OUT THIS WEEKEND!!!

I'm in the same boat as you really. I usualy only have one friend over and we chill, smoke and play some vijamigames. I personaly went with a one hoser since only one person can smoke at a time anyway. We just let the hose chill and when one of us dies or whatever thats when we smoke. If you want a two hoser though, I would recomend an auto-seal.

The pull doesn't just depend on the auto seal. It is a coincidence that most auto seals just have smaller hose adapters than traditional models. Auto seals are great party hookahs, especially for people who just throw a chunk of shisha and a quick-lite (foil optional). For most more frequent smokers the classic hookahs have few downfalls.

That's good info guys, I've always wondered about the auto seal feature. I've got a four hose egyptian I love but sometimes it is a little of a pain to put a rubber stopper in it or people keep their fingers over the hose.

I did find some rubber tips that go around the hose and you can put in the hole, I won't advertise for the site but it's an idea if you want to stick with the traditional.

I dont have a decent picture to show you, and I can't be arsed to crack out MS paintbrush. So you have to use your imagination!

Ok, heres a standard picture of an autosealing hose adapater.



The hose adapter is conical, as shown in the picture. The top bit screws into the hookah, and in the bottom part you push in your hose. Clearly when its on the hookah it will a different orientation than shown in the picture, but for now we'll use this picture to explain how it works.

You see the screw-head shown on the picture? Well between that and the top of the adapter (the "apex") is a ball bearing. The ball bearing can only move by a few millimeters. When you have the adapter in place the ball bearing falls towards to the apex and causes a very good seal to develop. When you suck through the hose, the ball bearing is sucked upwards by a few millimeters, therefore allowing air through. However, if you blow, the ball bearing is pushed towards the apex and due to the conical nature of the hose adapter it will seals off the air flow.

Its very simple. Infact, you could quite easily modify an existing hose adapter to make it autosealing (one screw and bolt, some plastic washers, and one ball bearing). BUT, I would only try this is if you're technically minded!

Nah! Most of my friends and I are well trained!! We always hold our thumb over the tip when not sucking. And we are even so well trained that its become a habit. When smoking a one piper , you can usually spot us holding our thumbs over the tip out of habit, even though its a one piper.

I prefer the autoseal just because I, as well as those who occassionally puff on my hookah, don't like having to hold the tip of the hose all the time(me neither, I like getting up often so I can play host). Sure its a bitch on the pull sometimes, but the clouds are still just as thick. All I have to do anyway is take the ball bearing out and its about the same as a traditional, maybe a lil bit tougher.

but...my hookah is now a lil of both, my adapter on the one port(its a two hose) just weakened and the cage for the ball bearing came out, so thats now traditional...anyone smokes with me, I use that hose so they don't have to be inconvenienced
