The smoke it not very thick and it is harsh but not a lot so pack less, pack more, bigger hole, smaller holes... what could I do to fix the harsh ness problem?

your hole size/pattern is perfect.

going by your picture, looks like you packed high enough (but a pic only says so much). Make sure its packed tight.

i cant help you out on how many coals to use because i dont use crap-noras. When i use exoticas, i place 2 1" pieces to get it started and progress to 3. If i use jap coals, i use 3.

make sure you have acclimated long enough and stir well. I have a video on here somewhere on how to pack the perfect tangiers bowl.

you need to light your coals longer first off, secondly use 2 cocos and then add 3 when it seems a little thin. Also what packing method are you using?

I like to just take a massive clump with 3 fingers and drop it on top of the bowl. Then clear the spot for the phunnel hole, and slowly and carefully remove pieces of shisha until it sits right up against the top of the bowl. And voila, good to go.

and coconaras are great coals not crap. to each our own, exoticas broke on me i'd say 1 time out of 3 coals everytime. I would be smoking, and the coal on top of the bowl would randomly crack and break into pieces. This happened w/ every box i bought new version and old version as well. If you were incredibly careful when handling and cracking the coals i'd say it happened 1 out of 4 coals.

You know what guys...
I love tangiers.

My method is as follows-
Grab a clump, place in bowl. Once the bowl is full of clumps, I top it off a little over the top of the phunnel. I lightly press town on the tangiers (keyword is light. I'm coming to find when a bowl is packed tight, it's typically a no-no). Foil her up, and use a standard hole pattern.

Smokes like a dream almost every time.

I love tangiers.

Grab and drop a clump to where it sits a half inch above the bowl, repeat the process until the entire bowl is that way. Foil it and press down to where the foil sits flat. Poke big holes all around the bowl. 2 coconut coals on top, enjoy.

ive used over 20 boxes of exoticas old and new and have never had them crack on me while on top of the bowl. Only time they may have split/cracked was when i was trying to break them in half after they were cooked.

That is as lit as they get on my stove

flip them over/wait longer

or build a little tinfoil teepee/dome with a hole in the top to put over them. It really helps trap the heat and heat them up more completely and faster. I saw a youtube video where the guy was doing that and thought, that's a little excessive, but I tried it anyway, and it works. I made mine way smaller than his so it can only cover about 1/2 of the burner. I don't even have to flip the coals over now. Use your tongs to remove the foil - it gets hot as hell (duh). I would use a touch less tobacco.

I use two cocos for the first little bit, then I add a third later when it gets a little too thin. To much heat will burn your throat with Tangiers. I personally use smaller holes and a few rows of them and none on the center. Keeps Ash from falling into the shisha...much worse problem.

i tried them again last night, and 1 cracked out of my 3 pieces. I don't know what it is man, but to be honest, they force me to go upstairs from my basement and wash my hands, so right there is a no no for me.

I used to love exoticas don't get me wrong, and i still do for the price, but compared 2 cocos, i'll stick with those.

wow i have been having so much trouble with tangiers packing but i think you finally helped me nail it. its still slightly harsh but less than usual and i did just start the bowl. ill see where it goes from here but i think this might be it! thanks!

so do the same thing you did with my technique but take out less shisha and you should be set.

I usually leave it right up to the edge of the bowl, maybe slightly over. And when I foil I don't push down with my palm so the foil presses against the shisha, I just foil normal.

Try using one less coal also and slowly work in the next one till you have optimal smoke and flavor.
