First Hookah Bar Trip

Recommended Posts

Tonight a buddy of mine and I went to the hookah bar for the first time.

I gotta say, everything I expected and more. Chill atmosphere, there were couches all around a coffee table. We ordered some food, and cillled with the hookah on the floor next to us.

The husband and wife workin it were great, I chatted with them a bit and am goin back in a few days with a bigger group of guys.

I must say, great experience overall and I cant wait to do it again.

We smoked raspberry shisha which tasted great.

One question though, do you knock the ash off the outside of the coal and move the coal around ontop of the bowl or just leave it sit?

We had 1 coal covering about 1/3 of the bowl on there, so i took the ash off and moved it around a bit about half way through the session. Is this bad to do or is it the right thing? Also, our smoke was kinda thinner. Could this be due to the type of shisha we smoked or is it normally thin smoke which discipates quickly. Edited by PhishPhood

When I go to the hookah bar, I kinda work the hookah. I will ash the coal, add more holes to the foil, and even bring my own hoses. The guys at the local bar know me as a hookah-knowlegable person...so they don't mind what I do. I even let the bar employees hit off of my nammor hose.

With my coals, i just leave them. i have gotten to the point where i dont have to move coals at all throughout the whole coal (not session) after the first set of coals is spent i pick up the whole bowl and tip the ashes into the tray.

Normally the smoke is thick, very thick. could be the shisha, could be the way they pack it. there are many factors involved. Without being able to know exactly how it was set up we might not be able to tell why it was thinner smoke.

Thanks for the replies. It was my first trip, and I don't own my own Hookah yet so I don't really know about packing and such other than what I have read.

They packed it up for us, and brought it over with the coal already on top ready to smoke, so I didn't get a chance to check out the inside of the bowl. I assume this is common practice unless you're a regular like some were saying they are.

Here are a few pics.

Yeah I started adjusting the coals and this guy who didn't speak English very well saw me and came running over "nanananaanannANANnnananananANn!"
And i was like.. ?WTF?

And he took the tongs and put them in his pocket and went away.

So i got up and found the guy who looked like he was in charge and asked why i couldn't move the coals. He said "We cannot trust the customers moving the coals because of incidents invlvoling hot coals and broken bases." I said "Dude, i know probably quardruple the amount you do about hookah smoking, atleast let me move the coal out of the middle of my bowl..." and he says "No, you are not a trained employee, so I cannot let you dabble with the hookah."
So i say "Do you evenknow what style of heart this hookah has? Do you even know the difference between Common and Traditional Chambers??" And he goes "All hookahs are the same as that one." ans i say "Wow, and I'm the one dabbling with hookahs..."

And then i sat back down and no one came to move the coal so i did it with my finger. They leave the coals in the middle of the bowl so Noobs think it's finished super quickly. I bet they even pack it just in the middle of the bowl....

I'd "dabble" with his face a little.
Maybe stick a hose through his right eye
put a coal on his left
and take a massive drag.

his bar, his rules. if you weren't satisfied you should have just left. getting up in his face and talking about how much more of a hookah expert you are will likely get you kicked out quicker than it will melt his 'customers hands off' policy.

He paid for the session he should be able to mingle with the coals how he likes. I hate Hookah Bars, they are all cheap scum bags pawning off nakhla for a 13 dollar session...makes me sick.

see, this is why i could never go to a hookah bar. the local one near my house, where i baught my Mya is pretty cool with chill people, but i still want to be able to have control over my own setup. what better way to do that then smoke with friends at home with my own hookah.

you handled that situation better than what i would have done. i either would have made a freakin' scene or just walked out of there. i may not know all the little details about hookahs, but i do know that the coal shouldn't just stay in the middle the whole time, or even start out there, jeez. It's a business; all that dude is worried about is money, and that's really sad, yo.

Something similar like that happened to my friend. She went to this hookah lounge called B.Bs or something in Cali. They wouldn't give her tongs or anything so basically the session was harsh as hell and they wouldn't let her do anything about it! How lame dry.gif

Its funny cuz the guy who set up her hookah has been working there for years and you'd think he know a thing or two about heat managment and why you need tongs o_0

by providing tongs to people, hookah bars open themselves up to a world of liability. just cause it makes sense that you shouldnt drop a hot coal on yourself doesnt mean people wont sue when they do. one cafe near me does not provide tongs because he doesn't want people dropping the coals on his tablecloths. if your coal is in the wrong place, take out your keys and move it. if the workers tell you to stop, inform them that your shisha was hot and not enjoyable. if they dont seem to care at that point, then leave and dont come back.

i understand u guys concerns about how they reacted but:
A: it is his bar
B: it is a liability to them if you mess with it
C: that was very rude to do to someone that is not american (i say this because i am polite to almost everyone i dont know, and especially polite to minorities becaus ei know alot of people treat them like shit just because they're different and i like ot be above some stereotypes)
D: you chose to go there.
E: he doesnt know you

think if you ran a business and someone came in and you served them and they got in your face and told you that something that originated in your culture was incorrect and they knew more about it than you. personally, if it was my business and you (or anyone) came in and did something like that i would have told you to get out.

The only hookah bar I've been to (Hookah! in Lafayette, IN, right off the purdue campus, maybe some of you have been there) has fairly good service. When I was there, an employee came around at fairly regular intervals, ashed the coal, asked us how it was smoking etc. It was definitely an enjoyable exeperience.

you know what, ES, you are right. it's all about covering your own ass. some of his customers may know more about the little in's and out's of today's modern hookah, but he knows more about running a business and about how much shit you can be in if someone gets hurt in your establishment.

So I went back yesterday with a buddy of mine just to give it another try. The guy working recognized us, and was very nice about the whole thing. This time he gave us tongs, extra coals and a lighter to get them going.

I can understand why we only got one coal last time.... 2 20 year old white guys in a hookah bar in the Middle Eastern section of town. Being the only white kids, obviously out of place... Now that he knows I know what I'm doing he will give me some freedom with it

Def going back
