I just use a long knife. Put the coal under the knife about 3/4 of the way towards the pointy end and slam it down with my hand. Makes a clean cut. :pardon:

Damn! This guy uses his hand as a hammer! That's hardcore... like parkour.

i used to have a tiny paring knife to do in, now i have a larger knife that takesthe blows from the hammer better, but it's a but wider, and i've noticed the coal is lacking size when i cut it with that as compared to my smaller one

For those of you with out a hammer you can always use a shoe (inspired by ryno)

I just score with screwdriver, place screwdriver in grove, smack with heel of shoe

Yes the shoe works great!

So what are you using ... All Stars or Red Wings?

Don't know where this is inspired from but I have always used this technique to cut anything that is 'a pain in the ass to cut'.

And I was inspired to do so by the survival show - Man Vs Wild...lol!
