Matt-641
So yesterday I wound up having to go to the hospital due to stomach pains. Come to find out it was my appendix and it needed to be removed. After the surgery was all done and I'm waiting in recovery, my mom starts reading the piece of paper to me saying what you should and should not do after the surgery (I was still a little out of it from the pain killers lol). She makes an enphasis to point out it says "if you currently smoke, stop RIGHT NOW!". I know I cannot have anything to smoke or drink for at least a day or two afterward, but do I really need to stop smoking all together once I'm fully recovered? Or is this just something that the hospital puts on there to scare you? Anyone who's had this surgery know if it is fine to still smoke like a week later...?I really hate to give up smoking the hookah
Dr. B
2 weeks is a safe bet. Nicotine can be a vascular constrictive and after surgery your body needs optimal conditions of bloodflow to repair itself. It's not something you need to quit forever, just get an opinion of your health before you pick it back up. AKammenzind
Psh, just wait till you start feeling okay. As a rule of thumb I'd say that if you're up to doing some pushups and taking a half hour walk... you're A-OK to smoke. That's what I go by at least. Thanks for the input.

Capt. Morgan
I'd say wait till your back to full strength then go and light up if you are so inclined. The quit smoking but is probably the hospital doing its part to discourage smoking,
EternalSoil
pshhh... they tell you to eat a snack before and after you give blood, have some kind of drink, and to not smoke and sometimes not operate heavy machinery for like 30 mins to an hour.i used to go in, give blood, leave, and light a cigarette right outside the door, then proceed to jump in my car (still smoking), then go drink.i was probably 6ft tall and weighed 140 at the time...If you wanna stop smoking for a week because of some appendix bullshit shit be my guest... pussy.haha, nah i'm just kidding with ya! i would say to kinda play it by how you feel. if you feel fully recovered, have yourself a victory smoke!I would be careful though, don't go powersmoke a bowl of f-line kashmir....btw i was only kidding about him being a pussy, i really used to do that! Voski
Um you should have a post op appointment in about a week or two with your surgeon am I right? Just call his office and ask. But I think they are going to tell you that they don't reccomend smoking and that's all you might get until you see the doctor. Atleast that's how it worked at my office. Dr. B
I got a similar story from the doctor after some head trauma last year. They basically said that as medical professionals they do not encourage smoking, but from a medical standpoint it ought not interfere with the rest of my recovery.Try to get a medical opinion, not a personal one - even if you gotta push it. Something along the lines of "would smoking after my operation be a detriment to my health any more so than it was before the operation?" should do it.
