Presidential Pardons

I disagree about your contention that the Presidential pardon wasn't designed to protect Presidential cronies. That's exactly what it was designed to do. One man's crony is another man's valued member of the Executive Branch who is being oppressed by political enemies. And that's what the Presidential pardon was designed to do.

Then I guess we should have a vote and see who all here as you do sees " the Presidential pardon wasn't designed to protect Presidential cronies. That's exactly what it was designed to do" in "he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment"

The only way you can see that is through huge assumptions. So if nothing else let's get a constitutional amendment that says the presidential pardon is designed to protect presidential cronies"
Amendments are used for clarification as well as changes or additions to the constitution.
