1/2 Coco Nara?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been having trouble with heat management with my new tobaccos (Tangiers Brambleberry and Starbuzz Blue Mist). I have AF down pretty well... I can smoke a good bowl with my Superchief with no problems for hours using two cocos. But these new tobaccos are giving me problems... they overheat quickly.

Some people have suggested using two halves of a coco nara on opposite sides of the bowl or using 3 halves around the bowl.

My question is this: how do you cut a coco in half? They are hard as granite. I spent a while yesterday sawing away at a coco with a serrated knife and succeed in making a bloody mess on my counter top. When I finally snapped it in two triumphantly... the other half went flying across my kitchen. I was thinking, "this is the last time I do this."

Any other ideas on heat management?

Cocos are good but if you need easier heatmanagement get some of either 3 kings or golden (not golden river, "golden") quicklights, those are easy to cut in half and less hassle if you need to light an extra piece real quick.

I agree with both the posters.

1) Use a chisel or a flat head screwdriver with a hammer to break cocos if you really feel you should

2) Having a roll of quicklights (goldens are the best) around make it very easy to manage heat, just light up a half or a quarter and pop it on. Plus if it's too much you're not wasting that much coal.

I have a really small egyptian bowl that I sometimes use for tangiers and need one coco split into 2 pieces. To do this I light the whole coal as normal, once it is completely red hot and ready place it onto the tray, place the tip of my tongs in the middle of the coal and stab/hit down into to. Every time I've done this it has resulted in 2 pretty much equal size pieces. When I do this I hold the opposite side of the tray with my free hand as to not tip the tray/hookah over when breaking. You could just do this in a pan or coal holder to bypass that step. Anywho, hope this helps. I find all coals are much easier to split after being lit...
