Shifty
I'll be taking a little vacation here in March to the land of the beaver. In Toronto there is a Hookah bar "Paaeez" I don't suppose any of our Canadian Forum members have actually been here to provide input to whether its worth me checking out. Longshot I know, but I figured its still a shot none the less. Edited February 22, 2008 by Shifty
adamjames
I know of this hookah bar but sorry to say I have never been there. I do know it is one of the fancier hookah bars, compared to the kind I used to go to anyways. If you are looking for a traditional experience I know of a few places in Scarborough which is in the east end of Toronto. If you'd like some info on them you can PM me. jfaltous
While the Toronto people are checking in here, I might as well ask a further question to Shifty's...What bars would any of you recommend in the downtown area? Specifically close to Yonge & Bloor.
adamjames
As far as I know Paaeez on College street is the only hookah bar downtown but there are numerous shops to buy shisha tobacco on Yonge street. If you're up to travelling a little Paaeez is not too far from Yonge and Bloor and you can always hop on the Bloor subway and take it east to Scarborough. I know of 3 hookah bars there. Seems to me to have the largest concentration of hookah bars in the GTA since they're all close together and basically all located on Lawrence Ave.
gaia.plateau
I checked out their website, looks pretty swanky.I tried contacting the owner to see how they got around anti-smoking legislation, but no reply.

adamjames
I agree Oasis is about the best one I have been to and their fresh juices are great. Sorry to say I haven't been to any of the hookah bars on Lawrence for a couple of years now so I'm not sure what exactly they are serving. I used to go to a little one just down the street from Oasis (can't remember the name) but it was just a very small traditional bar. I would think the larger and more popular ones would be more likely to have trouble with the smoking laws. I just don't see them bugging a tiny Arab shop in the corner of a plaza. I'd also think most of these places would go out of business if they only served tobacco free shisha. Maybe I wiil take a look or even drop by one soon to see what's going on. I've actually been meaning to check for some time now...
jfaltous
http://www.martiniboys.com/Toronto/Paaeez-nightlife.htmlRead the user reviews on Paaeez towards the bottom.. it seems that their service is severely lacking, people are rude, long waits for hookahs, etc... and some of those reviews are very recent (within the last few days). The place does look nice though.
Perrj99
What sucks about internet reviews is that in many cases, only people with negative things to say leave a review. People with a complaint are far more motivated to go out of their way to post reviews on things than someone who is satisfied. Now, I however, know nothing about said hookah lounge...even though I'm just a couple hours from Toronto. Maybe next time I'm there I'll check it out. Probably not though. Heh... jfaltous
Granted, but if I owned a place I'd make a point of never letting that many customers in that short a timeframe leave that unhappy

Shifty
Well reading the reviews apparently Oasis has both Tobacco free, and regular shisha, the way they get around it is that if you want the regular stuff, they have a patio out back where they can serve it to you. Since I'll be there at the end of march, doing it outside may be a little cold, so I may just go there for one of their famed juices. Thanks China and AJ, anyone else with info plz feel free to jump on in there.

Shifty
Ok, so... I had my girlfriend (who lives in Toronto, my reason for going) call Oasis to check on what brands of Shisha they have and such. Why is it places seem to have difficulties with this? You ask for a brand, and they give you a flavor... Anyway, after a back and forth a few times finally she asks the lady on the phone if they have any shisha with tobacco in it and not just herbal stuff, and the lady vehemently claimed that all they have is herbal/tobacco free. My Canadian even brought up smoking outside and how other people she has talked to claimed that they have smoked non tobacco free shisha there many times and this lady was in straight denial. I'm going to go on the assumption that either A. they don't ever tell people over the phones their deal. or B. This lady had no clue and was just a juice lady. hokkahnewb
Went to paeez about a few months back.. the place is rocking.. no doubt about that.. they know how to create the atmosphere.. but when it came down to the actual thing.. the shisha.. it was HERBAL.. lots of fumes.. no buzz.. and the molasses burnt really fast..I asked 'em about the herbal molasses and it was due to the no smoking in public place policy of toronto.. paid $20 for each round of shisha.. left around 11pm that night.. next morning.. we open the papers.. and find 2 people were shot at paeez.. at 1.30 am.. Lucky escape.. my shisha at home rocks..
