Help Unscrewing A Stuck Stem

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I could've sworn I was a member of this site, but maybe not, it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a nargile that I bought in Beirut several years ago. It's the kind that unscrews completely to fit in a case, but lately two parts got stuck, namely the bottom part of the stem, and the unit that sticks into the vase. No matter what, I can't get them unscrewed. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What types of tools do you have at your disposal? If you have a bench-mounted vice, you can strap it in (with a cloth over it) and try and separate it. You might want to try tapping the threaded area with a rubber mallet (or cloth covered hammer) to try and loosen it up. Running the threaded area under hot water might also help.

If you feel too much resistance - stop. You can do more damage to the threads.

I tried it in a vise, after boiling it to get it as hot as possible, but it was really hard to get a grip on the stem part. I saw something on this forum about PB Blaster...would that work?

what, like twirl it around?

Exactly. If they get stuck, use fire to get them unstuck, not a third chopstick.

Hassouni: Ignore him wink.gif... there was a guy awhile ago that stuck chop sticks in his stem, then stuck a third one thinking it would get the first two out... He had to go to Home Depot and hammer them out with a dowel rod.

Yeah, it didn't sound like a very serious suggestion. I'm not a noob, I've been smoking for 4 years now, it's just been kind of an occasional thing in the last year. I went and bought some liquid wrench, we'll see if it works.

All jokes aside, any form of loosener should help. If it's stuck due to corrosion, maybe some CLR and WD40 mixed together.

Anytime I see stem and stuck together, chopsticks is first to come to mind.

Looks like you got some rust on the other valve for the stem... Might be rust on it... WD40 ect. could help, but all in all you might need to get a new hookah. I wouldn't want to be smoking rust.

That's just the vent. I removed valve piece and the ball bearing while trying to get the main part unscrewed.

another thing to do if wd40 doesn't work is put the part that you screw the other piece into in boiling water and put ice around the piece that screws in ( the hot/boiling water would expand one piece and the ice would contract the other just enough to break the temporary friction bond between the two metals) or you could get a rubber mallet and tap it while someone else tries to unscrew it (watch out for fingers).

Liquid wrench has proved futile...

But, this worked: boiled the part, took it out, stuck the base in a bench vise, wrapped the top part in a sock, took a monkey wrench and bam, brute force!

Heating up might have been the wrong direction to go...freezing it might have been better. If the threading/lug is made of a as expansive/more expansive metal than the port, heating it would be the wrong direction to go.

Oh well, at least its off now.
