Hi everybody. I was browsing the net and I found this site and started reading some posts. Seems like a pretty cool community to I thought I might get involved a little bit. I live in Southern California and have been into hookah for a few years now. Well, I think the best way to introduce myself would be sharing with you one of the hookahs I've made that I hope you all like…

I call this "The Engine!!!" It's a hookah made out of parts from my old VW air-cooled engine. After my roommate introduced me to hookah I wanted to make my own, this was about the same time I was rebuilding my 1600cc VW bug engine, so I decided to do something crazy. For those of you that aren't familiar with engines here's its basic anatomy. The water sits in two separate cylinders, joined at the top by the cylinder head and at the bottom by a custom fabricated mount. The stem is the intake manifold and the very top is a piston. Inside the piston sits what we call "The Nugget. It's a piece of metal piping bent into an oval to fit in the piston. Both sides are open so the tobacco sits in the middle and it is wrapped in aluminum foil. They great thing about this is you poke holes in the top and bottom, this allows you to flip it over half way through for a long even smoke. The smoke actually passes into the intake port, through the water, and out the exhaust port through some braided steel tubing. The two chamber design also makes it so that when 2 people are using it they don't have to bother plugging it, like with a one way valve. Or the two chambers can be combined to take advantage of the full volume of water with a single hose via the spark plug socket.

The parts were all bead blasted to remove all dirt and contaminated metal before being painted so it is perfectly clean. This thing smokes amazingly, and was a hookah of choice for over a year. The only real downside to this hookah is it weighs about 50lbs, and it's a bitch to clean and set up. Well that's it. At the moment unfortunately it is sitting in a box because a couple of chips to the paint left it starting to rust. Hopefully soon I can re-blast it and get it chromed or powder coated.

That is amazingly original!

I'd love to see more photos of it - What does it smoke like? Was there any residual taste [from the engine] ?

I imagine that cleaning it is a pain in the ass though?

Congrats on something truly unique, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks everybody. @johnny It smokes amazingly. Like i said i beadblasted it first so it completly clean. Unfortunatly some of the pain has chipped and it has some light rust so right now its just sitting in a box until I can blast it again. It should look even better once I powdercoat or crome it.

Its got 2 hoses that we usually use it with, braided steel. The Spark plug sockets can be used to get another 2 hoses. The great thing about it is the ports are wide, so if i really wanted to and since they are threaded. I can just at adapters and give it as many hoses as I want and theres no balance issues because its so heavy.

I am not aware of any particular materials difference between type ones and other engines. Everythings coated with non toxic paint as well.
