I call this "The Engine!!!" It's a hookah made out of parts from my old VW air-cooled engine. After my roommate introduced me to hookah I wanted to make my own, this was about the same time I was rebuilding my 1600cc VW bug engine, so I decided to do something crazy. For those of you that aren't familiar with engines here's its basic anatomy. The water sits in two separate cylinders, joined at the top by the cylinder head and at the bottom by a custom fabricated mount. The stem is the intake manifold and the very top is a piston. Inside the piston sits what we call "The Nugget. It's a piece of metal piping bent into an oval to fit in the piston. Both sides are open so the tobacco sits in the middle and it is wrapped in aluminum foil. They great thing about this is you poke holes in the top and bottom, this allows you to flip it over half way through for a long even smoke. The smoke actually passes into the intake port, through the water, and out the exhaust port through some braided steel tubing. The two chamber design also makes it so that when 2 people are using it they don't have to bother plugging it, like with a one way valve. Or the two chambers can be combined to take advantage of the full volume of water with a single hose via the spark plug socket.
The parts were all bead blasted to remove all dirt and contaminated metal before being painted so it is perfectly clean. This thing smokes amazingly, and was a hookah of choice for over a year. The only real downside to this hookah is it weighs about 50lbs, and it's a bitch to clean and set up. Well that's it. At the moment unfortunately it is sitting in a box because a couple of chips to the paint left it starting to rust. Hopefully soon I can re-blast it and get it chromed or powder coated.
