Lighting up "classic" coal

Recommended Posts

Ya, The local hookah bar here just puts the finger coals straight on the coils.
I use a smaller brazing/creme brulee torch:

Holed em with my tongs til they get going, drop them in my holder, get a few going, drop a few on top. Smoke time.

Yes the little burner will work.
I imagine you can cover th coil with foil. just turn the burner on high and put the coals on. wait till they are ready. 2 minutes or so.
Are you asking how to make your own charcoal?
If so...... heres how they do it... or used to do it. find some good clean hardwood like mesquite. Chips should work. set them on fire. Midway thru the burn you need to take them and place them in non-flammable place that you can control the amount of oxygen that gets to the chips......... what happens is that they will smolder very slowly due to lack of air. Using chips. this will take approximately 10 hrs or so.
Where I was born they had these great big brick barns that were "airtight" and they would have entire logs in there smoldering for days..... then they go in an bust it up.

HAHA, no, I wasn't asking how to make my own Charcol, I'm not that into having an authentic smoke, thanks for the tip though.  I was mainly asking if that little burner would have enough power to heat the coals, and if so, whats the best way to prepare them.
Does anyone have any advice as to where the best place to buy natural coals online is?

Thats the thing, I'm not sure.  At the local hookah lounge they have people walking around with tray full of glowing red hot coals.  They're all different shapes and sizes and seem to work really well.  My main attraction to real coals is they burn cleaner don't they?  Less carbom monoxide right?  I just want the cleanest, healthiest solution.  Social Smoke sells "Olive Wood" coals, but they are out of stock right now.  Is that what I should be looking for?
