Yeah, he's right. Iron is a nutrient at lower doses, toxic at higher doses, as is copper, although copper has lower thresholds of toxicity. I think copper and brass will be fine. I smoke out of a brass pipe all the time, brass contains copper. Even drinking water out of copper household pipes is safe and perhaps a nutrient...smoking out of it should be just as safe or safer. Even the small quantity of lead, which is far more toxic, in pipes isn't enough to create a large dose of lead.
