The best thing is to have a selection in front of you so you can choose one that's deep and has the holes spaced evenly! I got really lucky, picked the best of a lot. Don't pay more than 4-5 bucks at a store. The markup on these is HUGE, and a mud bowl (non glazed clay) should only be $2 if that's your only choice. Keep with ceramics.
