Mya Is Tasting Disgusting

Recommended Posts

So I got my Mya about a month ago, and have probably smoked about 15 bowls out of it. Now, for some reason it is tasting absolutley horrible like metal and burnt wood or something. Its disgusting. I nuked the bowls in HOT water and lemon juice and cleaned the hose. I cleaned the stem and base in lemon juice a few days ago. I went to smoke a bowl last night and almost puked it was so gross. I narrowed the problem down to the heart, you know the part where you connect the stem, base and hose. I'm smelling it and it smells like bitter sharp metal. Kind of like copper or iron or something. The inside has a slight red tint so I think the core might be copper, its def not rust. I nuked this thing in baking soda and scrubbed away. Those who have bohemian Myas know that the hose stem and valve have separate chambers the taste and smell is coming from inside not the stem part. Also, the stem is lumpy and looks like it has some type of buildup on the inside, but its the metal. Does anyone else's heart look like that through the stem. The guy I got it from got it in Kuwait he said, could it be some cheaper version? It was not used btw. I've seen several mya's and every part looks exactly the same. Also, I'm using Starlight charcoals, has anyone else used these. I was using 3K before, but I know thats not the problem. I don't know what to do, this is disappointing. Does anyone know where I can just but the heart piece. Mya only sells the entire stem section. Thanks a lot.

Kinda strange...

I HATE the starlight coals...they are crap.... which might be were you are gettingyou metalicy taste from..

Try bleaching the "heart" of the stem..... Put like a cap full of bleach in a bowl and let it sit for a few hours then rinse it out REALLY REALLY well...

Thats all I could imagine you being able to do

The metal is lumpy on the inside from the casting I've always assumed, but its nothing to worry about, even though it does make it difficult to clean. The only advice I can think of would be to soak the metal parts of your hookah in a warm baking soda/water solution overnight, and rinse them super well. Its impossible to scrub all of the little pits on the inside like you describe, so soaking over time is the only way to get your hookah clean.

OK.. I know exactly what the problem is.

Sonthert pointed out someting in a reply to an earlier post....

For some reason the aluminum core stems on those things develope this almost waxy substance after smoking.

I thought I was getting all of it cleaned out each time I cleaned the stem, but I wasnt. The inner core screws into the pieces that the bowl seat and the heart meet up....

The inner core leaves this little gap on the inside there.... and that damn waxy stuff builds up in there. I found that the heat from the bowl was must have been making this stuff put off a vile taste..... because after I broke it down, cleaned it and immediately smoked again... everything was good.

Gotta break that aluminum MYA core down and clean it! I do it everytime now.... no smoke without a clean. Edited by Lakemonster

This is exactly what I was getting with my Mya. The waxy substance is actually ash caught in the humidity of the tube. Also when you say nuke I hope you dont mean you put metal pieces into your microwave or something? Anyhow this is why I dont smoke through my Mya anymore. The egyptian pipes are alot easier to clean completely.

Haha I think my house would be on fire if i put the stem in the microwave...Anyways, lake, I know you are taking about the shaft breaking down (mine goes into two separate pieces, i guess the longer it is the more pieces), but this taste is coming from the heart not the shaft. I have cleaned this thing so well it should not still be tasting like this. Is letting it soak overnight safe? It sounds like my only option. Do you owners of the mya's have a metallic smell and taste coming directly from the heart? Thanks.

I own a MYA and have the same stem "heart" as yours and never had any issues, been smoking out of it for a year. I own a SS Egyptian as well and find it to be much more difficult to clean simply because it's 1 piece and larger. I prefer to smoke my MYAs any day over my SS Egyptian which everyone here loves. I enjoy it, but not nearly as much as my MYAs. Clean it with soap and water, not sure about soaking it for an extended period of time but I clean my pieces all the time with soap. Have you tried using a brush to reach in and grab some of the crap off the walls? Try reaching out to MYA, explain the problem and see what they have to say about it. Those guys will take the time to explain and do whatever it takes to make you happy.

I can't tell from your pic, but does your stem resemble this one?

Here's a different angle on the stem, looks as if you have 1 of the 3 pieces of the shaft.

I'm trying to determine whether or not it's the same. Have you asked MYA about a replacement heart, last time I spoke with them you can purchase individual replacement parts.
