Stealth Posted November 12, 2007 Share Posted November 12, 2007 OK, So I mentioned a week or so ago I was also working on alternative heat for hookahs as coals all bullshit. Normally I like to just show finished products but I thought for a change I would show you what I have so far. Propane is what I am working with. As you can see the shisha sits in a metal cup with holes drilled into its sides. It hangs from piping that goes right into the stem. What you can't see is that on the piping that goes through the cup there is a series of holes pointed down towards the shisha. Now for the tests I have been covering the top with aluminum foil with small holes in it to trap most of the rising smoke. For dramatic effect I put the torch on high giving a big cloud of smoke. My new experimenting rig is my old medium Stargate.These propane tanks costs about $2.50 each, that includes the actually tank, haven't looked into if you can refill it or you could probably just get a big 10 gallon tank and use that and refill it yourself. The small tanks last about 20-something hours straight on those micro burners.As you can see I have the torch being held in place with a microphone stand for easy manipulation. Obviously once I figure out how to control the heat for the perfect smoke I will make an appropriate mount. Another possibility that I will be testing out soon is using those small tea lights. Those are very cheap as well and should be a simpler alternative to those that don't want to deal with propane. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dr. Atkins Posted November 12, 2007 Share Posted November 12, 2007 Wow, excellent idea.Suggestion to adapt it for a candle: solder on a little metal spike on the piping below the bowl, so that you can jam a candle down on it and have it sit still. They give off extremely toxic fumes when heated above 400 degrees. Solder is certainly dangerous if heated to even lower temps. But keep working on it...its cool. Geiseric Posted November 13, 2007 Share Posted November 13, 2007 (edited) That's because most solders have lead in them, and as the the copper, it looks like he has aluminum in the spot where the heat would really be touching the metal. As the others, I am curious how you are keeping it from burning to hot? Also, any ideas for controlling how much it burns as to not waste shisha? Stealth Posted November 13, 2007 Author Share Posted November 13, 2007 To answer some of your questions:So far the smoke is really harsh, it was burning it to fast (again, i turned the flame way up for the picture just for fun.) I'm modifying the bowl to make the heat more even. on a torch you can adjust the flame size, and the final mount will be slightly adjustible too. It would probably take a little experimenting but once you get it right, unlike coals it will be consistent.I have only been doing short experiments but those small tanks of propane should last about as long or just under a back of natural coals. The propane cost about $2.50, the coals about $4. Ive been too lazy to make a special trip for the tea lights but I'll update you all when I know. I really think they should be enough heat.And for all of those mentioning metal safety, you can post your knowlege in the new metal safety thread with all the other experts. Anyway, no, the stargate is just find I just started using it as a test hookah because its my oldest hookah and its really sturdy and easy to work with. Other than that tiny little detail, I think its a valid solution. Please, show us pictures of the produced smoke.What if instead of propane you used a regular heating element?
