Carbon dioxide is not anywhere near as poisonous as carbon monoxide is.

It takes approx 17% of total air volume to be CO2 to kill you.

It takes much less CO to do the same

Correct. As I stated in the other thread, carbon dioxide is not 'extremely poisonous'. It is dangerous when it's displaced a significant amount of oxygen, but calling it 'extremely poisonous' is silly - we produce a ton of it in our own bodies, for god's sake.

Of course, discussing carbon dioxide in the context of hookahs is silly, because it's a non-issue for hookah smoking. Now if you're one of those crazy dry-ice-alcohol-inhaler people we discussed a few months ago, then maybe you have something to worry about...

On a more serious note, there is good evidence that smaller hookahs produce more mainstream carbon monoxide than larger hookahs. Something to think about if you are concerned about CO inhalation.

My goal was to have this topic locked and have it as a general "warning label" if you will. I found this afternoon that last night my friend tried doing this and he's really sick. I told him he's retarded and should've researched it before he did it, but that it's a mistake and he didn't know. But his impulsivity almost killed him. Kind of ironic that he was doing it as I posted this. It's a shame. I think he's going to pull through, but doctors are keeping a close eye on him. He sounds like he's been smoking for 60 years. Kind of a hoarse whisper. Everyone should know not to do this.

Macho 555, I'd prefer if you wouldn't say "no duh" because I have a friend fighting for his life in the hospital right now. People just don't think about the harms that can come with doing this. Their own innocence can kill them. As the old saying goes, curiosity killed the cat.

If you user BBQ Coals, then you deserve to die. Case in Point.

Seems a bit harsh. I think everybody would have probably tried it if they didnt find out sooner.

Agreed, in the moment you realize you're out of hookah coals, briquettes seem like the obvious second choice. Then you look at all the CO warnings plastered all over the bag of the seeming lifetime supply of hookah coals and realize that it may not be as good an idea as you originally thought.

I think people new to shisha should know about this, I hope your friend recovers quickly.

TO ALL WHO THOUGHT THIS THREAD WAS STUPID:

Here's why I made it! And the doctors say he should make a full recovery. They reccomended that he not smoke for a while and he laughed (then caughed lol) and told them "Life without hookah is not worth living, but, ok." lol Thank God there was no dain bramage! tongue.gif Anyway, I hope it's a quick recovery so I have a smoke buddy, but, I guess I'll have to wait. Thanks for y'alls support! Smoke on!

Okay, sometimes I act like such a know-it-all asshole here I start to even convince myself I'm an asshole, but I can't help it - I really don't like mistruth. Hence my insistence on correcting you twice about carbon dioxide and being annoying in the other thread, about Smiley's.

Anyway, this is gonna top it all: I don't really believe the story about your friend. I mean, I believe the base of it - carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common type of poisoning in this country, and it certainly may have happened to your friend - but it is most certainly embellished. I know more than a little about CO poisoning, as my area of study is Cognitive Neuroscience, and many interesting neuropsych patients result from the associated brain damage, so I'm not pulling this out of my ass. So far as I know, the pulmonary symptoms of your friend's ("he sounds like he's been smoking for 60 years. Kind of a hoarse whisper."; "he laughed (then caughed lol)") are not a big part of the clinical manifestation of CO poisoning. I mean, frankly, they sound like symptoms one would guess come with CO poisoning, but they're not really part of the picture, from what I understand. Along with the huge coincidence that this happened to your friend at the same time you were posting on the forum and the fact that other people here have (stupidly) smoked using barbeque charcoals for a while with only minor problems (headache, confusion, vomiting)... I just don't really believe you.

So yeah, I'm an asshole, and sorry for that. I mean, maybe the validity of the story is completely moot. But the whole thing just struck me as fishy - am I the only one?

Actually I never said the hoarseness came from CO poisoning, did I? He was smoking hookah, cigars, unmentionables and drinking a few beers. And yes it is true. He asked me if I wanted to smoke that night. I said no. I just didn't feel like it and had an overall bad feeling about it. It was one of those last-minute phone calls. I read people extremely well. I myself would consider a Psychology major, but, I don't feel like dealing with psychotic assholes. Not aimed at you, it's just the truth. I have tons of friends and I help all of them with their problems. Now, I only have about 20-30 close friends, but most of them are just "acquaintances" I guess you could call them. They all come to me because I am amzing with words and have a nack for helping people. I think it was my God-given gift. I've sadly had to talk 7 people out of suicide. I know how the world works and how people work. Anywho, to get back on topic, I'm sorry, you do come off (to me anyway) as an ass. But that's ok. I probably come off as a stupidass to you. That's cool too. You don't know me. You don't know my friends. Therefore, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't make assumptions about my friends. And don't make assumptions before you know the whole story. You should learn to maybe just let little things that don't matter, that don't have any impact on your life, go. Honestly, what did it accomplish but confirm to me that you are an ass and piss me off that you said you think this didn't happen to my friend? Would you like me to send you his medical records? Will that make you happy? I don't know why it was so bad. I don't even know how much he smoked. So, I don't know the whole story with him. He doesn't remember that night. He sounded kind of toasted and wasted combined when he called me. All I know is what I heard from his doctors. It could have been all the combined activities from that night that he didn't feel the symtpoms as much till he started puking to hell. But he's ok and that's all I care about. I've lost too many friends from stupidity. So, mcgsinc, I'd really appreciate it if you stop making assumptions to practically all my posts. Oh, and the sentence by sentence review on the Smiley Price thread was a bit outragious. If you just ask for all the details that I know of before you criticise me, I'll honestly be glad to tell you. I'm just tired of you knocking down my credibility is all. This one is a great example.

Smoke on! Take life one day at a time and live it to the absolute fullest! It could all be over tomorrow! Live life the way you want, you're going to die anyway! Sounds stupid, but, it's true! XD

If the way you describe yourself is accurate - people come to you because you're amazing with words and you are the best thing in terms of dealing with their problems - then we have more in common than I imagined.

Look, here's the issue: you cannot come onto a forum and make huge warning threads with large text in red and then tell scary stories about the potential consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning if you don't have all your facts straight. Your original statement had an inaccuracy about CO2, and I was not the only one to call you out about it. In re your friend, whether or not you meant the implication to be there, you did imply (VERY strongly) that your friend's pulmonary symptoms came from the CO poisoning. You should have told us about everything else your friend did that night, because it does matter. You warned us about a choice we might make in our own lives, and it's not fair to ask us to make that choice based on misleading information. I hope you understand why truth matters when you bring concerns this serious to public fora.

If truth is not respected, you end up with middle-school-esque rumor mills. "Hey, I heard online that there was this guy who nearly died - and all he had done was smoke hookah using barbecue charcoal." While it may keep people from smoking with bbq coals, and that's a good thing, the end result simply doesn't justify the mistruth. It's these same rumor mills that result in the quotes you see on tv specials on hookah, where kids in hookah lounges think somehow shisha is magically nicotine- and tar-free. It's also probably these rumor mills that somehow convinced you that inflation had to do with large, short-term, product-specific price increases, which it simply doesn't. That's not inflation, and if I and other posters hadn't called you on that issue, then someone else may have come here, read your post, and went away with his/her own misimpression of what inflation is - and that's not fair to that person.

Welcome to the forum - I hope you stick around for a long time. But realize that no factual issue is a "little thing" that doesn't matter, especially if you make a huge-red-text warning out of it, and I will not hesitate to call you out when you fail to check your facts in the future. Know at least that you're not alone; I do this to everyone here. Sure, it probably makes a lot of people think I'm an asshole, but I hope it also makes certain people respect me.

Well I've seen him do all those things with my own eyes and smoke hookah with regular coals and he was fine. And for the last freaking time. I'M NOT WRONG ABOUT THE CO2 (carbon dioxide) THING! Did I ever say that CO2 is more poisonous than CO (carbon monoxide)? NO! I simply stated truth. Like I've said before, I agree that CO is more poisonous than CO2, but CO2 is still extremely poisonous to the human body. Notice when our body does make it every day, we expel it from our body. I'm sorry you have a problem with always having to be right. Maybe you should try to help yourself in that area. Yes, some things stand to be corrected, but not EVERYTHING. No one (that I know) likes that at all. And to be honest, I haven't told any mis-truths yet because I don't like giving unreliable information. Smiley even said that he's sorry that all materials went up in price, THAT'S CALLED INFLATION LAST TIME I CHECKED! Therefor, his price raise was to cover his own ass. SO, I was right. Thank you. And I will stay here a long time. Sounds to me like you have an ego issue. You can't stand not to be wrong. It's not about truth with you. If you do this to everyone, you have to be right. Remember, I was considering a Psychology major. I read people so well, that even on instant message programs, I still know something is wrong with people because they are out of their normal element. They don't do normal things. Either way, it was due to inflation. And I'm not wrong about CO2. I didn't give any statistics for a reason. I don't have them. I don't care to use them because I'm just trying to get the general idea out there that they are both harmful. It doesn't really matter which one is more harmful, as long as you avoid inhalation of both.

This has nothing to do with hookah, but for the love of all that is holy would someone please tell this kid what inflation is.
