Desktop Or Laptop, What Are You All Rockin?

I'm going to be looking to get a new computer soon. Not immediately, but I'd say in the next 6 months or so. I'm just curious what are you all using? Why do you use what you do? Favorite feature about it? Etc. Please don't post debating the pros/cons of anyone else's hardware/setup. I'm just looking to get opinions here. Thanks everyone.

For a desktop I use a Mac Mini. Works great. First switched to Mac in 2009 for editing and photo software. They are great computers. For a laptop I just got a MacBook Pro 13" on Monday. I love it! Both computers serve me well. :)

Asus Republic of gamers laptop here, my gaming towers are collecting dust but they will soon be used more often. I really need to build a new rig my laptop is as fast as my desktops atm.

Can't go wrong with the Asus line especially the RoG line if you like to game, they are reliable and affordable. Only other brands I would recommend besides that are Lenovo and Toshiba purely on build quality. Laptop parts don't last very long so you want to go with a manufacturers that makes them to last and has a low rate of failure, the brands I listed make up the top 3 in those categories, even apple is way down the list to those 3. Macbook Pro 15". Only computer I own, and I see no need for anything else. I got it for video editing. It's the best for such things. If you don't plan on doing anything such as video or audio editing, I don't recommend it (unless you have the cashola and are willing to lay it down for a Mac). For simple surfing the net and other simpler tasks, I recommend a Sony Vaio. Out of all of the PCs I owned, it served me the best.

I prefer laptop over desktop because these days they can do everything a desktop can and they're easy to move if need be. I take mine to work and school, so laptop suits my needs best.

I have a PC desktop and a PC laptop. I hardly use the laptop. In fact, the only time I use it is for tinychat or for watching Hulu on my TV. I'm into customizing my computer and gaming, so a PC desktop is really the only way to go for me.

What do you want to use the computer for? Any brands that you want to rule out from past experiences? Do you have a PS3 or Xbox360 so you can stream media from a desktop, if you get one, to your TV?

Unbeknownst to most people Apple really isn't best at those things they just have a lot of software that's easy to use. Hardware is what drives video and music editing the software can be had on either platform people like mac because it's easy and for the "exclusive" stuff if you can call it that. Studios use Apple because of their package deals with the software and because it's "hip". Edited by littlec

Studios don't use apple because it is "hip". They use it because it has the best software. Where as if you own a PC and want to do quality video editing, you have to buy a $1,500 program that the instruction manual doesn't even know how to use.

Goes for you too, Mike. Although, I think you may have been typing your post same time as mine. Anyway, OP specifically asked to not argue setups. Thanks.

Feel free to start another thread to argue what's best. As long as it's kept civil. :)

Stuck with prop software, I am a windows victim. Would have a mac in a second if the vendors ever made anything for them. (Even though I think Jobs is an ass, and I dislike the apple way of doing things... it still beats microshaft.)

Notebooks, ROC G73JWs. Great machines with a horseshit - rinky-dinky keyboard, and a battery life measured in milliseconds. One would have Asus could have done much better. Desktop is homebuilt disaster of overpriced top-shelf parts all working in perfect unison to completely suck.

here is what it boils down too
macs are great for video,audio,photo

PC can do the same but unless you build it yourself or over pay for the hardware you want prebuild .

That and pcs are more versatile, you can upgrade your pc you have to buy a new mac.

pc's are also faster on calculation , but enless your decoding a gnome that is kinda irrelivent
i used pc, ive used a mac.

on my pc i can render video faster than a mac can, but macs are good for media projects out of the box
ive had to acquire my editing software

I use vegas mac users use imovie
i use audacity mac user use gerage band
i use photoshop mac user use photoshop

photoshop seems to load faster on a mac than my pc.
my brothers mac starts photoshop in like 5 secs mine takes 7-10 seconds not a hudge difference but just of observation

and Gaming . gaming on a computer you want pc not mac

Sorry Stuie, I'm not an IT person so I don't know all the details. Thanks for clarifying my point.

I do find it worth noting however that the editing houses I've visited in Nashville were all on Apple servers. Also, at my school, we have about 50-100 (I'm not exactly sure how many there are) Macs scattered around in JUST my department building (Mass Comm). All of these are on Apple servers. In other words, in my field, Apple is used a lot, even when it comes to networks.

Apple Networks only handle Apple Products. Connecting Windows or Linux is like pulling teeth.

Windows and Linux Network Environment will handle all, except Apple keeps changing their stuff around so they have problems. Got Macs working Perfectly until the last OS Update... I keep a rubber hose for anyone that updates to it without my permission...

Apple, Windows or Linux will never be crushed by another.

Apple needs to learn to play along, it will hurt them in the end.

iOS and Android all run off a Linux Kernel. (Even Apple and Google Need Linux)

The Brazilian Government has gone completely open source, Linux, OpenOffice and Thunderbird.

Windows still remains the standard for Enterprise Computing.

Apple remains the favorite among Media Specialists and Hipsters. (Let's be honest, it's overpriced).

No one has a true upper hand to squash another.

Can't we all just play nice in the sandbox?

I agree, hopefully we will see some changes now that there's a new CEO (Tim Cook) in the house (even though Jobs is still Chairman).

I don't understand why Media Specialists would prefer Apple if it were more expensive. It leads me to believe that they use Apple because it simply works better for media-based applications. I'm sure if other products worked better that were cheaper, they'd be more than happy to use them to save money.

You know what tho , the computer debate is the same as the shisha tobacco debate.

Look at the factions we have , Tangiers vs non-Tangiers . Naklah VS non naklah , Etc.....

Starbuzz could be seen as a mac its over priced has a nice look but at the end of the day its still tobacco
Tangiers - Reasonably price Gets the job done and then sum ,but it can be temperamental = Linux

well i dont really think Nak is windows ,but i have not really smoked nak flavors to call it a reliable tobacco to call it windows .
AF could be windows i love af ,but sometimes AF pisses me off with its lack of quality controll some times (Visata Pre SP1)
after SP1 i guess any tobacco that is popular and easy to smoke

Also i wish the windows file sytem had tabs , i love in 7 that they grouped applications in the task bar and i made short cutting to them easier .
What i want from windows 8 (not that crappy interface theve shown us) is tabbed file system.

but i digress

Witch ever your looking for go with what feels right for you and what your most comfortable using . weather it be a PC or a Mac, Hell even build a comp and toss on ubuntu . At the end of the day you will be able to Post here and smoke hookah.

Ok, I need to clarify. I don't do computer gaming. Mostly i use my computer for work, messing around online obviously. Watching movies or watching tv/movies online and listening to/organizing my music. So I really don't have high end needs, but I will be making sure I have plenty of memory on it, whatever I decide to get. I do appreciate everyone's input though, by all means keep it coming.

I utilize a small alienware laptop with a wide monitor on it so I don't have to always squint at the laptop. And it works pretty good for me for just messing around the internet.
