The Electric Hookah

The Electric Coal was purchased on Ebay, Electric Coal

The Nawras was also an Ebay purchase. Nawras Hookah
So far I have noted these advantages:

Once plugged in the "coal" has heated the shisha to smoking temperature in less than three minutes.
No ashes to mess with.
No charcoal smell to affect the shisha.
Zero chance of any CO being produce in a closed environment from burning charcoal.
The only downside so far would be the fun factor of doing it "old school" with charcoal is eleminated.

In setting up the foil, I put about 9-10 holes in the foil right in the middle where the "coal" sits so the heated air is drawn directly off the heating element. So far so good, I can't really give a comparison since this is my very first Hookah experience, and so it may be that a more seasoned hookahphile will see more problems with this set up.

They need to make one that'll run off a battery for a few hours. I think anyone that's tripped over a hose knows what I mean

How does it compare to good ol' coals? Can you make a video showing you smoking?
Well, I can't really say as I've never used charcoal, and I'm using a different bowl set up, now I am using a "minicupcake" design for use inside the bowl the hookah came with, I'll post some pics on this later. This inner bowl design gives a much less restricted draw than the Phake phunnel design used yesterday. I've also fabricated a heat conserving device from two Frisca cans after the nature of a windscreen but with only a small opening for the powercord and to let air in. I now am able to turn the "coal" on high, wait one minute, start smoking the hookah, then turn it to the lowest heat setting and leave it there for the duration. I just finished with an hour and 40 minute session with about 10 grams of AF Two Apples.

I still use dial up so a video is pretty much out of the question.

How kind of smoke volume do you get? Does it ever get harsh?
Well, it seems to be fair, but not huge clouds, it did get harsh earlier today, during a 3 hour session, the last 15 minutes, but then when I stopped and looked under the foil, the shisha had become a little ashey, I had over smoked the shisha. This coal will never go out as long as power is supplied, another lesson learned.

The vendor rating sucks. as do people's comments about the heater.

We have discussed that unit fairly extensively in the past.

Hmm..can't find the other threads but i know they are out there.

Safer smoking is like army intelligence (sorry to the guys i know in army intelligence) if you are that concerned with your health, just stay away from smoking.

@ Mushrat, Thanks for the link to the thread.
I used to upload videos a few years ago, and I had dial up too. The speed was like 256 kbps. It would be really helpful if you can upload a video....may be from a pal's home ?
In leiu of me getting a camera with video, I'd be glad to send this to someone here in the states to do a video review. I would be glad to send it to someone, and if they'd like to review it , I could loan it out if they'd pay for the return postage, I would be willing to let them use it for 4 or 5 weeks. Stuie, I like reading your reviews, would you be interested? I'll PM you so you get this.

I can perhaps do a trade with you- some Coconara naturals in exchange for some time with your electric coal to try out and do a video of?
No, I have not done Charcoal, Coconaras are top notch. We could cerntainly do a swap, I'll make you the same offer I did to Stuie, you can keep the EC for four or five weeks, test it out, then send it back. I'll have to see if Stuie is interested first. If not, we have have a deal!

I've been told those electric coals produce crappy heat and have heard more than one case where it caught on fire because of faulty wiring, buyer beware.
o.O really?

I actually participated in a hookah study at my college where we went through 4 sessions, changing one factor each time (think it was 1. longer hose 2. electric coal (as opposed to a ql) 3. different type of foil? 4. control). So the independent variables seemed pretty silly to me as a hookah smoker, but the study directly tested CO blood levels before and after the smoke, and I typically tested around 3-6 ppm before smoking and around 18-25 ppm after smoking by myself in each session with a quick lite coal for ~30 minutes.

The session with the electric coal was actually comparable to the other sessions smoke-wise (This was a legit, NIH-funded study, so everything but the independent variables had to be kept as constant as possible, and the easiest way for them to do that was just to sit a quicklight in the middle of the bowl for the entire session. Needless to say, the smoke and flavor weren't optimal, but the point is, there seemed to be a minimal difference between the quicklights and electric coal.), but my CO levels after the smoke stayed very low, around 6-8 ppm.

At home, I rarely use quick lights, but I'm wondering if it's still possible to get the quality-of-smoke and heat-manageability of natural coals from an electric coal. Benefits, as mentioned earlier in the thread, would include long-term cost, and it wouldn't necessarily be inconvenient since generally a hookah is stationary during a smoke.

So if anyone else has had any experience with these, I'd love to hear about it. (should this thread be moved to general discussion??)

I, like the traditionality (new word i made up) of actually having coals atop a hookah..

but i definitely see a place for an electric heat source. But It makes me wonder.. what type of harmful stuff would this cause? the heating and inhaling of different metals is definitely not great for your body either.. may not be CO.. but there's got to be some major stuff being emmited..

Part of the enjoyment, dare I say charm, of smoking a hookah is that it takes time. It's a leisurely activity not to be rushed. An electric heat source might work, but it would take away a little bit from something that I personally enjoy.
