I would have taken pictures but I had company over and I did not want to weird them out and go through the whole deal. Besides if they knew they were being used on an experiment they would be weirded out even more.
So they unwittingly helped me out and had a great time. The bigger coals worked much better. Everything was the same as far as the ash and all. There was 4 of us total so it was being constantly hit on for a pretty good while. I got caught up a little more in the company than keeping track of time and all. But that was okay.
This weekend will be really busy cutting up a bunch more discs and making a big batch or two. I will update you guys. Not much left to do as far as talking about it goes. It's time to get the stuff in the mail and anxiously await the verdicts. I paln on shipping on Monday so by Tuesday and Wednesday it should start showing up. The closer you are to Texas the quicker you should see it.

Well I made a two five gallon buckets full of coals. Could have made a lot more but I figure it was more than enough and extra to last me a good while too. Some of the disc are up to 3.5" in diameter. I am cutting those into 1/4's. Some of the 2" I am going to send out like they are. I am curious as to how those will work on bigger bowls.
I am going to test one of them out on mine tonite. Those can be quartered as well but I figure they should be tested like this. There are smaller rounds all the way down to about 3/4" and some "fingers" a few inches long.
I may have covered most of earlier but as of right now the stuff is ready to ship so I figure I would cover what I am sending.
I am having to "season" (dry out) limbs under 2" because I used up the little of that I could find. 3" and larger is the norm when it comes to seasoning wood because most is used for grilling.
Once the verdict is in to mass produce or not I will get a bunch of it seasoning and keep a sufficient supply.

I will post pics later and let you guys know how a 2" goes.
Just a tip Scalliwag, sprinkle your coals with coal dust before sending them out. This help the coal light faster. Use the dust from when you cut the coals.
Will do. Thanks for the tip. I soaked one in rubbing alcohol and it caught on fire real good, but the alcohol burnt off faster than what I really would have like it to. The coals are pretty dense. Hmmmm, maybe a paste made with alcohol and coal dust? The alcohol definately burns off as clean as you could get.

Most of the isopropyl alcohol is 30% water. If you pour some on a flat piece of glass and burn it it does not leave any noticable residue. I am guessing that whatever is used on the quick lights does not burn away nearly as cleanly.
Inhaling high concentrations of vapor from isopropyl alcohol is not at all good but when you consider how many household goods as well as medicinal purposes and the wipes for monitor screens and such we are talking about a pretty high PPM in the air before you have real adverse effects.
Yeah it would burn clean... but wouldn't it evaporate on it's own, too?
Yep it will do that. So you would have to keep it sealed or get down to business pretty quick. I tried an experiment and it did not work out well. Even a paste made with sawdust and alcohol was pretty much a waste of time. For now it has to be the stovetop method still to get enough surface area burning good.
It got going pretty good around the outer edge I wanted to get one side going good.
Once I got that going it proved to be WAY too much coal for one person, or at least me to try to smoke all the way. I needed to do one a bit smaller... like a 1.5 inch or 1.25 but not one this dang big. I smoke way too much and did not get the coals packed. I was way too buzzed.
So tomorrow after work and before I get to doing anything I am packing the boxes for you guys on the list.... I PROMISE!!!

BTW a Bud Select cap is about the size of a quarter
thats a big ass coal lol, so instead of using my usual 1.5 to 2 quicklights i can just use 1 of these haha
well if you can smoke that in one sitting by yourself you are mch more hardcore than me. I hit it steady for probably 45 minutes and I had to tap out. If I would have paced myself better I could have gone longer I guess but there was still plenty of coal left and between the beer and the hookak I was buzzing to dang darn.
I can hardly wait to try a big one out with a group of three or more. That way I am much more proned to a reasonable pace.

I have had chemical analyses done, mesquite charcoal has about 16000 ppm in sulfur, while Japanese coals have around 1200 ppm. Eucalyptus coal is about 400 ppm. Your ash does look a little sulfury.

Im not sure about i the US, but in the UK, you can't reference wikipedia in formal research. i think it's something to do with the fact anyone can add to/edit it.

Dihtdrogen sulfide is rotten egg smell. Very poisonous. Elemental sulfur is different, more oxidized than that. Sulfur is generally poisonous and also takes oxygen from the carbon oxidation which produces more carbon monoxide.
