Scalli,If you're going to send stuff out, want to consolidate and also trade some ma'assell flavors?  I have some Tangiers, Fakher, Golden Fakher, and Romman I wouldn't mind trading. No offense to Tangiers, by the way.  Great stuff, just some flavors that don't do it for me.  I wasn't smart enough to hop on that Kashmir bandwagon
HAHA. get em.

So whats the difference between these and bbq bricks? i guess im asking if these are the "good" coals?
From what I am reading charcoal briquets are made using chemical additives and crushed carbon. Natural charcoal is also called "lump" coal and is more expensive. The wood is cooked without oxygen present so that the wood does not burn. Something like 75% to 95% of the wood is carbon. All of the oils in the wood heat and turn to gas. The end result is charcoal that looks EXACTLY like the wood in size, shape, etc. except black. It could be called a "carbon copy" I suppose
That it why I am cutting the wood to a specific size and shape prior to cooking it. So all I have to do is toss them on the burner and then into the bowl. The crap is messy when you try to do anything else with it once it is in charcoal form. Coming up with a few ideal sizes and shapes will require a lot of smoking

Haha!!! If I quit posting you guys may want to check the Fort Worth obits. I am going to have nearly a two week headstart. Last night I smoked the hell out of it. Two bowls by myself and it's a pretty big bowl. At least 3 hours of smoking.

well he used them, and hes not dead...yet. Im really not that worried about it. You inhale fumes from tucks and cars everday when you drive. So what if i get some fumes from this? I know when to stop smoking something, when im dizzy or dead.

ye, briquittes are basically powdered coal, reformed. i don't know what they use to hold the powder togerther or is it is just pressure and heat or something, but i assum there are some additives in it.
Any dizzyness, lightheadedness, nausea, upset stomach, aches, pains, lighting self on fire?
Well I got the same buzz only bigger because of the amount I smoked and the 5 beers I drank. I royally frigged up and knocked over the hookah last night and burned two places on my carpet in my study. My wife is still going to kick the crap out of me
I smoked more last night than I have ever smoked it is very safe to safe. Other than the nasty taste in my mouth the next morning (even though I brush before bed) it was like any other morning. I will have to test more but with the quicklights I lungs, throat, chest or something always bugs me the next morning. I am pretty sure that is because I have a tendency not to let them burn long enough before I put them on tho! So that would be my fault.
I will smoke more tonight and see how it goes.

That is not a problem. I will throw two batches in a box and ship
to either of you on the promisary that said recipient of package does
not loot other parties sample.  I PM'ed him but have not heard back yet. Since you will be going there on a regular basis the joint shipping will save $.
Tiiiiiiiiiight.  Hopefully he responds soon!  LMK what they say.

Got ya covered Tyler.
I was reading something interesting that answered the question on why you let the coals cool overnight. The coals are so hot that if you expose them to air they will start burning. That makes a lot of sense. But also made me think of something that would be fun to try. Heat the coals while they are covered in a small pot or something you can cover pretty tightly but with enough give to release pressure. The theory I have is that you keep a big batch covered and take a few out at a time and if what I read into this is true they will ignite with either no fire or very little.
If that is the case it would be a good thing for lounges to do. It would be easier to keep coals handy without wasting as much coal.

I will test that tonight as well.....

Mesquite IS high in sulfur. Sizes are going to vary, smaller than the most commonly used ones for BBQ is better, since bigger makes for more difficult heat control...About golfball to walnut size is best, I think.

The wood is high in sulfur but once converted to charcoal I have serious doubts. Mainly because at least the batch I made burns pretty slow and not much odor, if any. Sulfur has such a distinct nasty smell and is so cobustable that if there was much present it should show signs.
I would like to have find chemical analysis reports on several forms of charcoal commonly used in hookahs and compare those to charcoal made with mesquite. I could guess and assume alot.
As far as the size and shape I want to make uniformed shaped discs cut to specific thicknesses. The batch I made was a pain to break up and what I cut with a hacksaw (after it was charcoal) worked fantastic but is not something I want to do.
So I will precut and make things easier..... errr I hope
well if the wood doesnt work out you can always buy different wood....
If mesquite turns out to have problems I will not proceed. Around here I can get the mesquite for free for clearing it off land. It does the ranchers a favor and the yield makes it worthwhile. Of course the work is not easy but that is where the hired help comes in.
So if all works well I can sell it for cheap in comparison to the prices I see doing searches on the web. Of course a lot has to play out. But if I can't make a good product for a very good price it does not do anyone any good.

I made some quick cuts and took pics. Imagine them black and that is what they will look like when done

Let us check the first batch out on this side of the Atlantic and get some feedback. If all is well then we can go from there.

One of my buddies that works at a metal fab shop is making me a little version of the kiln. He was pretty caught up on work so I faxed him a drawing of what to make which is just scaled to about 1/16 of the monster my buddies Dad made. It's costing me $50 plus beer after work.
I'm gonna leave work a little early and take it home and put it together and throw some of wood I have ready into it and fire it off.
So if this goes well I will have a really small batch of hookah friendly shaped coals. If it works REALLY well and makes big enough batches (I think it will knock off at least 50 lbs. per batch)

I just got permission to clear all the mesquite I want off a 200 acre place. He just wants us to start in a particular area he needs done first is the ONLY request! Well the other it not to leave any limbs and I am not planning on that. There are more trees than I could use in years there and it's only 5 miles from my house.
