Hey everyone,

looking for insights of whihc is the best coal to use.

Quicklight, natural , whatever else...

Not only which of the two but also which brand happens to be really good and affordable!

Thanks

In my opinion, the best natural coal is Coconara. But some good runner-ups are Al Fakhers, Exoticas, and CH (coals sold by HookahJohn, but we're not allowed to spell out the name here due to drug connotations). For quicklights, the only ones that I've tried that I can actually bear are the CH QLs. Some good runner-ups for quicklights would be Three Kings, Goldens, and Al Fakher quicklights. This, of course, is my opinion. It's probably different for everyone as to which is the coal of choice. The only coals I'll buy from now on are Coconaras or Al Fakher naturals.

If you can find them, buy Canary Golden Charcoal...buy them all.

there won't be many left on the market...

Yeah, Starlights are pretty decent too...

benji- I looked around and can't seem to find the GC's anywhere. Sorry...

I light my coals on my electric stove, just set 'em directly on the coil for about 5 minutes 'til they're red halfway through, then flip them and give them another five minutes 'til they're fully lit. Good to go.

Well according to Michael Brant in California these coals are 3/5 stars.  Yeah right.

The ABSOLUTE BEST is the natural wood chunk charcoal. This is what is used everywhere all over the Middle East, literally. If you've ever used them, they have the best heat, the least taste, and are cool as hell. However, the sizes are highly inconsistent, and they're hard to light. The best compromise is coconut coals, Coconara specifically, though I haven't tried CH. Al-Fakhers are not as good, I feel they have a taste to them that's unpleasant (nowhere near as unpleasant as a quicklight though)

I liked the way the natural wood bulk coals smoked, but I lit them on my stove and they popped and made quite a mess.... Plus the inconsistency in size is quite a hassle keeping them on the bowl and whatnot. And touching them turns your hands black...

I have been using Starlight Coconut since I ran out of CocoNara. They are very inconsistent. Some are ok, they are too fine but most break either into 4 pieces or two by themselves which caused a couple of coal accidents on my table. I would love to restock on CocoNara but they are expensive.

My Starlight coconut naturals split into two thin slabs, everytime, never fails... I've almost burnt my carpet about five times now, as they like to split after they're lit and I'm picking them up to place them on the bowl.

naturals > quicklight

i would tell you to stick with john's CH naturals or coco naras.

if you buy john's coals by the case they're very reasonably priced and he has flat rate shipping...

Lighting naturals on a gas stove is a bitch. I don't think it would be worth it. I stayed with my girlfriend for a week, and she has a gas stove, and I didn't have any quick-lights on me. So we held the coals over the flames of the gas grill with tongs, and waited for them to be lit. We had to use oven mitts because the tongs got hot, which sucked. And it took at least 5 minutes to get a coal to light.
Needless to say, it was horrible.
I would suggest getting some sort of hot plate or portable electric coil thing.

Unless somebody knows of a more efficient way to light naturals on a gas stove, and I wasted all that time for no reason...

use a metal screen or grate to place over the burner...set the coals on top, light the burner, wait 2 minutes, flip and then wait 1 minute...

i find the gas stoves actually light nats faster if you use the grate thingy..
