Any Ideas For Coal Substitutes

Recommended Posts

Hey peeps,

So I'm home for spring break and I ordered a Mya QT from MNH. I got a starter kit with hookah, coals, etc. Except MNH forgot to send me my coals. Now I'm staring at my brand new Mya, my 3 packs of AF, etc but not coals to smoke it with....

Any ideas out there for home made stuff that might be a substitute for coals? Also, there are no hookah shops close to me so I can't just go out and buy some dry.gif

Your help will be greatly appreciated. happy.gif

The only other option is this small pack of old Egyptian coals I found. My ex brought it back from Egypt back in '06, it came free with one of the hookahs she bought.

No idea how these work of they're even worth it. They feel a bit flimsy.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

You can find natural lump charcoal in the grill section of most stores. Make sure its not the briquettes, most will say on the box. Just make sure its 100% natural. Its not the greatest (at least for me, I've never had the best of luck with lump coals), but it works in a pinch

Ryno has the plan. They work ok, but you have to flip them regularly or the side on the foil goes out.

You could always use BBQ coals. I don't recommend it, but.. *shrug* A friend of mine used to use them for his, but he lit the hell out of them (like 20 min lighting on the stove on high heat) before using them. He also split them in half length-wise first before heating. No one else wanted to take the first puffs on them.. lol. Once they got going, they were okay.

Thanks for the various answers. I eventually got a buddy of mine to buy me 2 rolls of coal one of the only smoke shops around. They sell crappy Swift-Lites (see review in Coal review section). It's always a rip-off at that place. They charge $10 for one single roll of crappy coals (about 8-10 pieces).

QUOTE (K1024 @ Mar 14 2009, 12:29 AM) you can make your own coals by burning wood apparently..though i cant say anything about the quality...

yah make a fire and use the embers.
they actually work pretty well

what types of woods did you use? my friend and I have been trying to get charcoals to work and with now luck. they work for a little bit but go out quickly. we have pulled them straight from the fire, we have even baked them to dry them out. baking them work a little better than pulling them straight from the fire.
