Down Stem Is The Diffuser?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone has done this before...say if you were to take your downstem and drill about a inch up from the bottom with little holes and plug the end up with a rubber plug or something wouldn't that work as a diffuser? Kind of built in rather than adding things on? Dunno Im bored, was sitting here and thinking about it.

Yes, it would work. You risk ruining your stem and your hands if you're not careful though. Plus the water level in the base would have to be higher.

Sounds like it might work.

I personally wouldn't do it, but I think its worth a shot.

Yes, it works. My hookah is like that. Although the holes are a bit too big and too few. The next one I make will have way more and smaller holes, but I'm still looking for a pretty vase before starting on it. Here is a pic:

i cant believe you smoke out of that thing, the materials you are using ie -- pastics, glues, paint, are not good to be smoking around or out of. You shouldn't smoke anything out of plastics, its really not good the heat from the coals warms the plastics and can release carcinogens. Just be careful, homemade hookah's are awesome, but really shouldn't be smoked out of if they are not made out of the proper materials.. it should be everyone's general rule not to smoke anything out of plastic, its just a bad practice..

As others have said, yes this would work but there are risks involved. Would be very very easy to permaney damage your stem if it happened to crack due to the drillibg or the holes were not the right size. Also it is unadvisablle to use a plastic plug due to the, albeit minor, risk of the plastic melting.

The smoke down there is not nearly hot enough to melt plastic!

yeah it will work. I have an extra downstem for my obelisk I plan on doing that too. Scalli gave me the idea at hookah stock.

There is *not* plastic in my hookah! The bowl and downstem are made out of aluminum (real aluminum, not aluminum foil or anything like that, with joints made with red-oxide silicone (it can take 300 ºC without damage, and even if burned silicone is inocuous) which is what is used in hot water and steam reservoirs sealing - so there is no health risk at all. The cover is made out of cork, again covered with a thin layer of red-oxide silicone. Both are toxic-free and the temperature in the vase cover area is actually really low, I'd guess around 50-60 ºC tops, so no burning risk there. The vase is normal glass, so no health risk there either. I know it does not look that good - I've been focusing on functionality on my hookahs other than beauty until now, so that might make you think it's like improvised or something, but no. You can dismantle it, put it in the dishwasher (theoretically, I've never actually done that, I clean it myself biggrin.gif) and it can take a *lot* of abuse - in fact it has already taken a lot of abuse, I've made it some 3 or 4 months ago. For the next one I will focus on beauty instead wink.gif

Hey, some people are working on a budget, making due with what they can. Some people like to make things they can use. I think its an admirable quality either way. That being said...damn!

People were into that a year or two ago. Not much ultimate success perhaps, it sort of died out.

I don't make my own hookahs because of the money. That hookah has actually cost me something around 15 €, and it's the fourth I've made so... I actually started making these before I found this forum and online shops, so I made my own because the ones I saw at shops seemed *definitely* dangerous (cheap bad quality hookahs).
