Favorite Background Hookah Music

Recommended Posts

thanks for the reply but I'm looking for some exotic middle eastern or indian music, if you know what i mean. There's a hookah bar that I like to visit that plays really mellow ethnic music, so that's sort of the style I'm trying to aim for.

Don't know about indian or middle eastern

Gregorian Chant, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones usually are great for me, or some original emo like Two Thirty Eight.

I picked up a CD by this group "Zohar" for like 79 cents locally, mostly instrumental, slightly electronic, dub, and hip hop influenced middle eastern/egyptian goodness. Check it out dude, good stuff and the group is actually led by Sacha Baron Cohen's (Borat for us stupid americans) brother smile.gif . Also Karsh Kale is great - Indian electronic and drum n bass influenced percussion heavy music. Both have a great mix of chill tracks and upbeat stuff.

Edit - Also it's not middle eastern but Bebel Gilberto is a great brazilian singer who's nice for sessions. I prefer the remix cd of her album momento but the original is great too.

Also check out Wax Poetic who has used the music of and influenced by Copenhagen, Istanbul, and Brasil on 3 dif albums respectively and fused them with his own blend of usually mellow and subtle electronica. I have the Brasil album and love it but you might like the Istanbul album better if your looking for a more middle eastern sound.

I know Thievery Corp. has a few songs that have some middle eastern influence in them. Other than that I'd recommend Godspeed You! Black Emperor, its just chill/awesome music. Go for either F#A#∞ or Lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven

I say google famous arabic Singers, Here are some good ones, for classic go with Om Kalthoum (although some songs are an hour long haha), for more modern and pop like go with Haifa Wehbe, Nawal Zoughby, Nancy Ajram, Moustafa Amar, Omr Diab, Miriam Fares, Fares karam. As you can tell I listen to a lot of pop arabic music, its all a good mix of upbeat, chill, cultural music.

I guess since I did my post on middle eastern music I get to post on other stuff now right?

I really like some DJ Shadow, G-Love, Ozomatli, Incubus, Roni Size, Galactic, Antipop Consortium, Beck, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Van Morrison, Mathew Shipp, and Otis Redding for sessions. Ah hell pretty much anything that's got groove, soul, or funk and isn't too loud and agressive.

I have no idea how some of you listen to As I Lay Dying and all that when you smoke smile.gif

I personally prefer some light acoustic music, like Elliott Smith or Bright Eyes.
Ravi Shankar is a good artist to listen to when smoking. Sitar music is always great for the hookah atmosphere.

Modest Mouse is good smoking music too. ^.^
