Standardized Review Criteria.

We should have standardized review criteria for tobaccos, hoses, and coals. I know that most of the tobacco reviews already follow a general outline but we should have a standard one.

I second that! Maybe set up a specialized php+mysql engine to support and unify the review system? For example, beeradvocate.com website and a pipe tobacco one (can't remember it now, and it's gone from my favorites for some reason) have nice systems that allow searching and sorting based on average scoring across different criteria.

I think it would make everything look nicer.

I totally thought that but forgot to mention it. It also allows reviews to be compared more accurately. As opposed to someone going 10/10 hell ya woo! Or someone taking time to write a intelligent review.

I don't think there's a ready-made forum hack for it. I do have some experience with web programming in general and ipb forums specifically (though pre-2.3 versions) though, and can help if needed.

i think just a sticky in the seperate review forums with a list of(in bold) the criteria for the items would work then people could just copy and paste and it would be more uniform

I deal with this request every so often and the answer is "it'll never work."

One thing is people don't read. Look how many people follow the basic rulkes about no drugs and non-reviews in the review sections. You all honestly think peole are going to read and follow a review template?

Second: everyone puts different emphasis on different things when reviewing. Some people rate the smoke volume. Which is BS in my opnion, the smoke density has little to do with the tobacco and more to do with heat management. Some folks Think the cut of the tobacco is important, other put empasis on smell over taste or visa versa. You are never going to get people to follow a standardized template and me and the mods got better things to do than to hold peoples hands when they post a review to make sure they are doign it right.

I myself prefer "brief" reviews. My pipe is immaterial, the coals are really as well, what is important to me is taste and duration of session. And even duration is a matter of heat control. What it looks like, what it cost, etc aren't part of what makes me want ot buy a tobacco.

So lets let eveyone review stuff as they want, emphasizing whats important to them, and you guys just read them for what they are....

could we have a poll for reviews then. Then it would be alot easier to see what people liked. Ex. every flavor has a poll with 1-5, 1 being they didnt like it 5 being they loved it.

That's going to be just as useless. What you give soemthing a score for might not be the same things I do. I may not like the flavour for real but scored it anyways. wouldn't be useful.

Great idea, just nearly impossible I think after reading Mush's comment. Since reviews are allowed to be posted by anyone there will always be variations that will inhibit it from being "standardized" I guess.

I need to disagree with the whole it won't work thing. In the main posts for each thread all that needs to be done is

Please post your reviews in this format

Something:

Something:

Something:

Something:

Something:

I have seen it work on other forums. I am not suggesting that EVERYONE will follow it but a lot of people would. Every time I want to post a review I always look for a post with a good set up and just copy that.

I'm totally down with a standardized review criteria. I don't mean to sound smug, but I feel that my format would be ideal.

I appreciate the feelings and thoughts, and having a nice clever database-entry type thing would be good.

But Mushrat has outlined the problems quite Nicely. People really don't read a damn thing. Especially stickies and rules strangely enough.

I think a standardized review criteria would be ideal, but if you guys say no then I'll respect your decision and let it go.
