I'll brobably visit NY this summer or winter, so hope I'll stock up then.Well, now back to browsing the forums to learn the how's and why's of the international hookah practices. MeHT Posted June 6, 2008 Author Share Posted June 6, 2008 (edited) Hookah joints are either overpriced, tended by what appears to be trained chimps (some even put coals in the bown right on the tobacco) or both. Stores sell only the basic hookah accessories, no fancy diffusers, funnel bowls, nammour hoses or ice-holder stems. There's one place called the Sevastopol Hotel which essentially is a hotel building refitted in a 15-storey shopping center, or rather, a bazaar. The vendors are mostly Indian and Arabic, and it's the best place in Moscow (probably, Russia, too) for all your hookah needs. Got my last sheesha there.Most of the hookahs are either cheap egyptian ones, although MYA, Ager and ELG are gaining wider recognition. The tobbaco brands are presented mostly by Nakhla (cheap and popular), Al Fakher (expensive and popular), Al Ajamy (moderately priced, not that popular), Al Waha (not that popular), and Havana (relatively new to the market, low to mid price range, gaining popularity). Sometimes Sevastopol receives Serbetli shipments, but they are usually bought out pretty quickly. There are also some obscure brands that are mostly sold at tobacco kiosks, rather that stores (like Habibi, which states that it's a Mac Baren tobacco brand and is made in Jordan, but tastes like dried monkey poo) and a russian bran Taj Mahal, about which the only good thing I can say is it present the only tobacco-free molasses sort in Russia. It's made out of sage and mint (or so they say) and tastes like cough drops, but it's a start, I guess.Well, that being said, most dedicated sheesha smokers who know what they're doing prefer smoking in the relaxed atmosphere of one's home, alone or with friends. Social smoking is more popular, even outside the sheesha 'in-crowd', whereas smoking hookah alone is somewhat frowned upon. I think that about covers it...
