Hookah For Non-smokers? (do You Need To Inhale?)

Recommended Posts

I am a non-smoker in south Florida. There is a local Hookah place called Buddha Bar which is a huge rave down here among beautiful women. The place not only has organic hookah products but it also serves organic coffee, cappucinos, wine and beer. It also features belly dancing too.

Anyways, on a Friday night, this place is packed with beautiful women, all smoking from Hookah and some guys. But, obviously the ratio is in favor for single guys like me!

So to my point. I want to be able to go to Buddha Bar and enjoy the nightlife scene there. But, i am a non-smoker, dont even smoke cigars, never have tried.

Obviously, going to a hookah place and not smoking is like going to a bar and not drinking. You stick out from the crowd.

So my question is, is there a way i can enjoy the hookah experience without inhaling?

Again im a non-smoker, so i dont know anything about anything with regards to smoking. But, is it possible for someone to puff the smoke without inhaling and experience the wild flavors offered through the hookah?

If yes, then how bad would that be for a non-smoker? Meaning, will i soon turn into a true smoker from this puffing practice?

If no, then anyone got any suggestions?

Im guessing here, that the hookah might be enjoyable much like a cigar is by non-smokers, where you dont inhale or breathe in the smoke, you just puff and get flavor in your mouth or something like that?

Again, im unknowledgeable with regards to smoking, so pardon my ignorance in my questions. Im just trying to get to the ladies!

you can puff on a hookah and not inhale but thats not very fun.

If you're worried about coughing or anything like that, a hookah's smoke is a lot less harsh than a cig. and is tolerated very well by "virgin " lungs that dont smoke anything.

I dont smoke ciggs and i love my hookah. My fiance is avidly against cig smoking, but enjoys a good hookah every now and then.

If you smoke hookah unless you smoke like 3 times a day (actual sessions) i dont think you'll becomes addicted to it. As i am not addicted to my hookah and i smoke it every night out of relaxation and family time, than actual need.

dont do something you are uncomfortable with just to impress someone. just because there are beautiful girls there, and belly dancers, you can impress them by being you...... you can order a drink and go with a couple guys and met them that way. Dont do something you are against in order to gain a girl.

The short answer is ... Yes

I won't pretend that smoking hookah is good for you in any way, but consider this. I've smoked a whole pack of cigarettes one evening under peer pressure (what can I say... lol) and I woke up in the morning with a sore throat for the next three days. On a separate occasion before this incident, I've smoked 4+ bowls of hookah in a night and woke up in the morning feeling great, not coughing up anything or feeling bad or anything. This is why I don't think hookah is naerly as bad for you as cigarettes.

I'd say try to find a seat away from the hookahs yet still near some women if at all possible. If that wont work, than just take 2 puffs (yes, you can do it without inhaling) before you pass the hose, and don't ask for someone to pass you the hose, just take it when its offered.

First off, Welcome to the wonderful world of hookah!!!

yes you can just take the smoke into your mouth and still enjoy it. However, you will experience more flavor and enjoyment from inhaling. Now i know you are a non smoker, but so are alot of people who smoke hookah; me being one of them. The smoke is not harsh at all like a cigar or cigarette. It is very smooth and mellow; unless its a very strong type of tobacco i doubt you would even sputter or cough. The people on this forum have also said they have never felt addicted to the hookah. Most of us go periods of time without smoking at all; like myself, i havent smoked in 2 months because i just havent had the time. I never had an overwhelming craving for the hookah. i did want to smoke but that was from the enjoyment and relaxation aspect as opposed to nicotine addiction. Also alot of people dont smoke multiple times a day like with cigarettes. Most smoke once a day or once a week or even once a month. I dont think real health issue will arise with moderation. In short, even though you do not smoke on a regular basis, i would challenge you to atleast try it out. Who knows, you may like it so much you purchase a hookah for home.

hope all goes well with the ladies wink.gif

the only way to enjoy it is to smoke it, unfortunately. there are things such as nicotine filters for hookahs that dramatically reduce the nicotine intake when you smoke, however this isnt completely getting rid of it and its also not doing anything for the tar.

i want to be honest because i was worried about the health effects when i started as well. looking around i found out that one sitting of hookah can give as much tar as a pack of cigarettes. so youre completely right in being worried and you are much better off not smoking. like many things however, ive discovered that moderation is ok for myself. this is coming from someone who has never smoked a cigarette or cigar too. i find that hookah is very enjoyable and smoke it once in a while. I suggest you don't go then. If you do not want to smoke properly there really is no reason to go to a hookah lounge. Now if your friends want to smoke and you dont then do that. But dont go to pick up chicks and not even smoke. I suggest you keep to the bar seen on that one. You can smoke like a cigar but it still is not very enjoyable. Like I said, friends either smoke and you enjoy the company or you stick to the bars. Thats is about as simple as the answer can be.

i saw a video where a porn star successfully took a puff off a cigarette, held it, and exhaled. I assume you can fill in the rest. So no, you dont have to use your mouth to smoke, if your female.

but since your male ill tell you this, i dont ever inhale the smoke into my lungs.

Heh, I think most people have seen that video. wink.gif Edited by mushrat

The short answer is "no". You will probably be obvious if you do not smoke in a smoking establishment. Nevertheless, I suggest that you go to the lounge, and just puff a bit on the hose. You may find that you like it. Trust me, there is no such thing as safe smoking, it is like "flaming snowballs", it does not exist.

Myself, I abhor cigarettes, the stench of stale burley tobacco is gross. I thoroughly enjoy the hookah, because you have such a "ritual" experience. It is a little difficult to describe, but you will see what I mean. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, and I never even saw a hookah, until I went to Saudi Arabia in 1997. I was then 43 years old, and my lungs were pure as driven snow. My first draw on a hookah left me a little dizzy and nauseated, but after about the third bowl, I was really enjoying it, with no coughing, no headache, no bad side effects at all. Ten years later, I have never had any problems, and I thoroughly enjoy the hookah experience.

I posted a topic here, asking if there were any female smokers, and I got mostly replies from men. But your description sounds interesting, nevertheless. Maybe some more female smokers will be joining us on this board.

I certainly encourage you in your quest. I am in Iraq, and I saw a short news report on CNN about the hookah lounges. I have been a hookah-phile since 1997, but I did not know such establishments even existed until one week ago. When I return to the USA (Aug 2008) I intend to visit the hookah lounges in Baltimore, if they still exist. Maryland is probably the most tobacco-unfriendly states in the USA.

Keep us posted on your experiences!

Hookah has no addiction; at least for me and I've been smoking about 2-3 times a week for yrs now so don't worry, you won't turn into a true smoker. When I first learnt about Hookah's, I was highly skeptical since I hate smoking anything else and didn't see the point but after trying it out a couple of times, I really enjoyed it.

As for Hookah's, you have to take a deep inhale and blow it out (instead of actually inhaling it). Can't really get any flavor or smoke when you just puff like cigar.

Like everything else (this even more so) moderation is key, I smoke 1-2 times a week except since I had a sinus infection. Waiting for the end of the month and not an issue. (Other than that I have a few gadgets to try on it, but I can wait wink.gif )
My wife is a non, and can do it w/o coughing so you can probably do it 2.

OTOH fakers are usually easily spotted, so if you want to do this make the decision or don't go there...

Thats called mental weakness not addiction. There is no addiction to nicotine in a hookah. It is all mental, if you do not have the will power to put it down for a day or a week then you really need help. I have been smoking 4 years now, hookah only and I can put my hookah away for as long as I feel.

you will not get addicted. The guy that says he does it every day does not mean at all that he is addicted, he simply enjoys it. For someone to say he is addicted because he likes to do it is not true. Ex: you play basketball every day. That doesn't mean you are addicted to playing basketball, you simply just enjoy it. Is it wrong to enjoy something?

By the way hookah is a great way to hook up with hot women. You have found a gold mine

here are two forms of addiction; mental and physical....you will not get physically addicted to hookah but maybe mentally addicted since you usually smoke for relaxation and lets face it if you do something that makes you feel relaxed and happy and relieves stress your just naturally going to mentally enjoy it and want to repeatedly repeat that expirience....But hookah smokers in general can just stop if they feel like they are smoking to much or whatever...

As far as health effects....smoking anything is not good for you....but keep in mind when you smoke a cigarette that you burn your cilia completely...with hookah they just kind of go to sleep...so with a little exercise and moderation your body will naturally bring up any tar that gets into your lungs....still if you are worried about any adverse health effects its just better off you don't smoke anything.

Thank you, I know it sounded wierd but like, everyone always wants to smoke so they chip in on shisha so I am always down to smoke. I've never smoked alone. I just do because I enjoy it...but when I run out of shisha for a while I never am like OH MAN I GOTTA SMOKE! I just wait till I can go get more

I'm trying my hardest to save this sample pack of SB for the big anime convention (XD) but I'm failing miserably. I can't help but smoke every day. I had a head cold and left off for a couple of days; I missed it but I wasn't ready to tear anyone's head off because of it...

i think may have to correct you.. The duration of smoking a whole pack of ciggarettes is about the same as the duration of smoking one bowl of shisha. water filters out more nicotine and if your smoking a washed tobacco your getting minimal amounts of nicotine into your system.
