Newbie Needs Help Making "Artsy" Hookah!

Hi everyone. Newbie here, and I could really use some help/advice. I'm a mosaic artist. I mosaic recycled objects with glass, jewelry, metal, vinyl, whatever. I would like to learn how to make a hookah out of a wine bottle that I plan to mosaic. Is this possible? While I plan on making one for myself first, I have a buyer who initially requested the idea. I've used a hookah a few times, but never put one together and I am clueless as to the mechanics. (Let the eye-rolling begin......it's OK, I can take it)

I would like to make a 3 stemmed hookah. I can drill the glass if need be. I will only be using wine/liquor bottles (on the inside) for safety/health reasons. What is the cheapest, yet most attractive way to do this? I don't even know the names of the parts so I'm not sure what to ask for. I saw a kit online for converting a wine bottle, but it was $60- too much. Another, called "The Witch", seems to be out of stock everywhere. Can I buy some things at the hardware store and others at my local head shop? Any suggestions on how to make it pleasing to the eye? And, I'm sorry to ask so much at once, please point me in the right direction as to how to put it together and be sure it's fully functional.

Also, is it OK that you won't be able to see through the base? Most hookahs I've seen have a clear base.

I've attached a picture of one of my pieces - it's a vase, but pretend it's a wine bottle and you'll get the idea.

Thanks so much in advance. I'm open to all suggestions/links/advice!

New Custom Hookah

Just gone done building this beauty. It's my first real attempt at a custom hookah. Parts are all food grade stainless steel (#304), rubber, or glass. I'm going to acid-etch some designs into the side soon and get a bowl that matches. Also working on making my own glass bowl. Will keep ya updated.

And then afterward I started on this 5 inch mini. I have since put a port on it but don't have pics yet.

How To Decorate Hookah Base?

Hello! I have a clear hookah base that's very, very plain and I'd just love to decorate it but I'm not quite sure how. I thought of using glass paint, but I'm worried it will come off if I wash it too often. If anyone has any DIY ideas, let me know!!

Boro Glass Stem Hookah

Howdy,

A project I've been working on for a little while now, is a glass stemmed hookah. This uses a 1/2 inch diameter piece of heavy wall boroscilicate (pyrex type) glass tube. The tube the hose attaches to is glass as well.

These are attached to a turned billet aluminum base, and fits in a standard hookah vase.

Its a dream to smoke thru....

Comments are welcome

P.S. You will be able to buy these at a future date.

Easy Diy Diffuser

For those wanting to try and make their own diffuser here is what I did. I have tried the straw method and the little plastic bottle with holes cut into it as well. I wasn't pleased with either of those methods. Now this may have been done before but I searched and didn't find anyone who has posted something similar to this.

1) Get a new sink screen (the kind for your kitchen sink) from walmart for like $1.20.
2) Cut the metal ring off the screen so you are left with just the flimsy piece of metal screen.
3) Take this piece of screen and fold it over the end of the stem
4) Take a piece of metal wire or string and tie it off as tight as you can onto the stem

Now you have a great diffuser that wont fall off or get into the way of you taking the stem out of the base. You can easily take if off to clean your stem though.

I have been using this for a couple weeks now and really like it. It doesn't effect the draw at all and makes the hookah nice and quiet if you are watching a movie.
