QUOTE (noodle @ Feb 23 2009, 01:05 AM) QUOTE (mattathayde @ Feb 22 2009, 07:02 PM) QUOTE (synthetik @ Feb 22 2009, 09:16 PM) though a little tangential to the main point of your study, it would also be interesting if you could explore the health benefits and/or detriments of the organic molasses that have been coming into increasing popularity of late, and contain no tobacco (such as saalaam molasses). Im sure many people are curious if these molasses are actually less harmful than the tobaccos we're all used to smoking. personally my edjumicated guess is that the only benefits of the the "herbals" is that there is no nicotine since they usually use a sugar cane its still an organic material and probably has many of the same basic structures to them so probably similar chemicals are released -matt Arguing that there's a hazard to that is troublesome given that people have been cooking food for thousands of years. If there was a problem with chemicals produced through cooking, I presume we have since evolved enough to deal with them. people also eat tobacco and dont get a buzz from nicotine in it, theres a difference between eating part of a plant or heating it up and breathing in what off gasses from it. just because its good for you to eat doesnt mean it is good to inhale steam/smoke off of it -matt

  3. Where Does The Buzz From From?

QUOTE (AJW @ Feb 17 2009, 02:37 AM) QUOTE (mattathayde @ Feb 13 2009, 05:09 PM) QUOTE (fcbayern @ Feb 13 2009, 07:33 PM) Sorry if this is a stupid question but if the nicotine is what gives the buzz.. Does this mean that shisha that is washed give less of a buzz? correct for the most part, some times part of the "buzz" is really coming from the stuff released buy quick light coals or from breathing deeply and frequently but for the most part it does come down to the nicotine -matt I'd like to know where you heard that. im not saying a huge part of the buzz does but for the simple fact that QLs give more CO that alone will give more of a "buzz" to some people -matt
  4. Where Does The Buzz From From?

QUOTE (Bulldog_916 @ Feb 15 2009, 11:56 PM) QUOTE (mattathayde @ Feb 15 2009, 06:58 PM) QUOTE (Bulldog_916 @ Feb 15 2009, 05:30 PM) What I mean by the nicotine is a percentage of the volume of tobacco means that if you have 1g of cigarette tobacco, it's 12% nicotine using Newports as an example. With shisha, it's far less, <1% per gram. That means that even if you smoked 50g of shisha in a bowl, that doesnt mean that you're smoking 50% nicotine. It just wouldnt make any sense. You're adding the relative amount of nicotine per gram of tobacco to get your final result. You smoke 1 bowl of shisha a day, that doesnt mean you smoked the equivalent of 15 cigs. It doesnt jive. o no i agree with cigs compared to shisha, but my quick research lead me to find you only get about 1mg of the 9mg of nicotine in a cig (the other 8mg is burned off), so ya there is probably about 10% but you only get 1% nicotine form the cig weight. nicotine wise i would say that a hookah smoker gets more nicotine over a shorter period of time, and if smoking a bowl of hookah was like 10-15 cigs i would be coughing my arse off since i smoke 2-3 hours a day of hookah and dont have a cough at all, yet if i smoked a cig the next day i would cough some -matt If that was so, they would actually be more addictive than cigarettes. This might actually be so the way some of us go at it. I only smoke maybe 2-3 times per week. But some do that in one day. It might now be too easy and too cheap to smoke hookah and not get addicted to hookah chemically or habitually. Now we really have to look at the addictive quality of the activity. Most will say they arent addicted, but I doubt that's the case for all of them. I may have to cut it back to once a week again. We'll see how it goes. while i am addicted habitually i know for sure the chemical addiction is not as bad as my friends that smoke cigs, if they dont get a smoke they freak, where as if i dont get a smoke, ya i want it but i can keep doing what i need to do and concentrate, i really think the extreme cravings related to cigs are from the extra stuff added in, not the nicotine -matt

to the whole "cigs have more nicotine" yes one cig has more nicotine than the same weight of tobacco in shisha but hookah smokers smoke much more tobacco at a time. -matt
  7. Where Does The Buzz From From?

QUOTE (prozak64 @ Feb 13 2009, 09:47 PM) QUOTE (SimplexCoda @ Aug 22 2008, 03:45 PM) its for sure the nicotine. In terms of having less than cigs, your prolly thinkin of tar and other additives. Im sure shisha and cigs have a simular nicotine count, but shisha has no additves other than flavor. I've often wondered about the nicotine content, though: if shisha does have a the same amount of nicotine, and if nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes, how come I never hear of anyone being addicted to hookah or having withdrawal symptoms when trying to quit? That's what's always made me wonder if maybe the buzz has a lot to do with something else. they say nicotine is the addictive part of cigs but there are many other things added into them that make them more addictive, and while i dont know of many people that jones for hookah like they do a cig i know i sure have a lot of "want" be it cravings of the mental or physical addiction of either the nicotine or just the flavor and relaxation also you have to remember that hookah is steamed (so yes the nicotine should be pulled out) but that may make a difference in some way compared to cigs since those are fully burned -matt

  9. i put them on then turn on the coil, i think that since it is heating up the heat penetrates better and doesnt get the out side going before it can heat the inside much. i always flip the coals, even if i leave on coals for a long time the top will not light very well -matt
  10. Smoking Hookah Give You Gas?

if you are burping your probably swallowing some air/smoke or the nicotine is starting to give you acid reflux. the lower intestine stuff is more than likely because you ate diner a little bit before you smoke and its starting to digest while your smoking. i dont think nicotine will effect you much by smoking it in the laxative department, i have celiac disease (eating any thing with gluten in it causes issues) and had almost all of the digestive issues with it, and might have a little IBS or IBS like stuff and nicotine never makes me move more -matt

QUOTE (gixxer @ Jan 12 2009, 05:30 AM) QUOTE (Hobbs @ Jan 8 2009, 05:10 PM) McDonalds kills, Stress kills, and Coke kills. Hookah does not kill. There are a lot of kids that smoke hookah at VCU though, so that portion is true I guess. I like to hang out with 'em. coke does not kill coke/ soda in general may not kill but i sure felt better when i stopped drinking soda (no im not one of those "dont drink soda people" i just went from drinking nothing but soda even right when i woke up to drinking a few of them a week) -matt
  12. Good 1st Tangiers Flavor

i wouldnt go with blue gumball, its an ok flavor but many people i know say they dont want to smoke it for very long. i had good luck with orange soda and schnozzberry (but it is the left overs mix so its not always available and it will always taste different). ive had ok luck with lime its just a light flavor, grape im not sure if i had a bad time acclimating it up or if i just dont like it, i can smell a really good canyish grape but it really doesnt smoke well and it has a lot of other smell to it (not BBQ or soy sauce) but i did have a pain acclimating it up ask the people at the shop (assuming they are not incompetent) as to what seems to acclimate easier there and what they suggest, some times its hard to acclimate stuff in certain areas -matt

QUOTE (mustang_steve @ Jan 8 2009, 06:37 PM) 5 packs....I call bull. Tobacco weight of one hookah bowl versus 5 packs is a HUGE difference. Total weight of one bowl of shisha vs 5 packs is also very significant. Where was this study done at, by whom, and who payed them? they used my school for the study reference as to how many people smoke, and ive seen a lot of the high numbers of tar and co2 and junk on flyers around telling people its bad for you... not many people listen -matt
