Like I said, I "wish that I didn't need to go through the little dance with [those] guys" but it is what it is, and since I posted my complaint, and they then fixed it, it deserved updated here, so people could see that while I did have a problem and while I didn't have to call them several times, they did, EVENTUALLY, do the right thing. Doing the right thing always deserves thanks in my opinion, and while it wasn't a great job that I had to call several times, I still don't take back anything that I said. I have no idea what happened on their end, whether it was a a simple miscommunication, or misunderstanding, or they were just trying to dodge the exchange. In the end it doesn't matter, they took care of my complaint, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt (especially because in the past when I've shopped with them they have been so good to me.)
"while I didn't have to call them several times" whoops, while I DID have to call them several times.

3. UPDATE: Just called Ashley as Social Smoke back. She apologized for the problem, and they are sending out a new vase for me!! Great Job SS! Much happier now, wish that I didn't need to go through the little dance with you guys, but (as long as this vase is a good one) I am happy again! Thanks!! Alex
4. MY apologies, this probably belongs in the social smoke reviews section (I swear, I did look but apparently I was a little angry and didn't see the section I needed). I want to call back and see if I can get a hold of this "Important person" who was too busy to get back to me... I wonder if Ashley expressed that the problem was less the rocking motion and more the angle of the neck of the vase... What do you think? I really don't want to yell at anyone on the phone today (and as a cust service person myself, know that won't get me anywhere...)
5. I am just getting back into the hobby, and have been buying some things to get myself back up and running. About a week ago I ordered a bunch of things from my go to online shop, Social Smoke (though I suppose it is my FORMERLY go to shop after this...). Included in the items was a replacement for the broken base of my my 3 foot 3 hose Social Smoke Hookah. Linky to item. http://www.socialsmoke.com/Glass-Base-Large-Traditional-Hookah-i For the lazy, the description is: (copy and pasted directly) "Details: These hookah bases are unique high-quality mouth blown hookah bases. They are beautiful replacements for just about any traditional hookah and are original equipment on Social Smoke Brand Traditional Hookahs. Type: Mouth Blown Origin: Egypt Height: Approximately 12 inches Diameter of mouth: Approximately 1.82 inches" My issue, as you can probably see in the picture is that the vase isn't even close to straight! The hookah sits at a precarious angle, this tilt is of course made even better by a LIBERAL warp in the base, so that it not only doesn't sit flat but rocks freely in the direction of the tilt of the neck of the vase. I called Social Smoke yesterday afternoon and spoke to Ashley, she said I was welcome to return it (because all I really wanted was a replacement that would let me actually smoke my hookah without the coals falling off) I asked if I could get a prepaid return label for it because the cost of shipping is going to be close to the cost of just ordering a new vase for it. She told me that she would need to call me back shortly. 24 hours later, I called back because I'd not heard anything from them. I spoke with Ashley again, she told me that the person "I needed to talk to" was really busy, but because of the way the vases are made, they are sometimes like that. I was again welcome to return it at my expense or order a rubber gasket for the base (which I imagine would help with the rock, but I don't know how it would help the massive bend in the neck of the vase). Now, I really used to love Social Smoke, their shipping is lightning fast, their tobacco is really good (one of the other things I tried with this shipment) and the hookah that I bought from them, outside of the vase issues, has been quite nice over all, and is my go to piece for parties and such (how the original vase got broken, and another reason why this vase is simply unacceptable.) In their defense, the description DOES day hand blown, I figured that hand blown would mean imperfections in the finish (which it has) bubbles in the glass (which it has) and other minor, and relatively cosmetic issues. I even expect a small amount of wobble from a hand blown piece (which a base protector would fix) but I didn't expect that the neck would be bent in such a way as to make the hookah base unusable. Am I way off base here folks? What do you think? Its not expensive, I'm almost tempted to just order another and let it go... but then since hand blown seems to equal "potentially useless garbage" to social smoke, I am scared to gamble with them again.
6. QUOTE (mushrat @ Oct 10 2008, 10:47 AM) Thanbks guys.. perhaps we'll have to ad PA to the list of places to open. I know Lum would love to move back there..come to think of it so would *I*. LOL I would love to open one here in Lancaster... problem is the local police... for whatever reason they have no issues with local tobbaconists selling headshop supplies, but hookahs are right out of the question. There is a tobacco shop a few miles south of the city in Millersville, PA (its a college town) but they say the police won't let them sell hookahs. I stopped in to that one in Lansdale... that place is weird. I asked what brand of tobacco they were smoking and was told, "I dunno but it comes all the way from the middle east!" (which means its the cheapest junk the guy can find) I get the feeling that the owner didn't hire... you know... hookah smokers. That and they wanted cash, and couldn't take a credit card. At those prices a CC is kinda a necessity... They make you pay to bring your own hookah and tobacco?? I suppose they do the coals for you but I really hope you aren't paying full price to smoke your own stuff...

8. Anyone Noticed Those Truth Campaigns?

QUOTE (Bulldog_916 @ Oct 27 2007, 08:54 PM) It isnt nonsense! I can GUARANTEE you that if half of the people I see at hookah bars knew that it was as bad as smoking, they wouldnt have picked it up. You know full well how young people think most of the time. "Nothing can hurt me, this isnt dangerous" Blah blah blah. You put a hookah pipe in front of them, all is cool. You put a cigarette in front of them, no dice, they wont even touch it. Why? "Smoking cigarettes is bad for you!" Hell, I'll go to the bar tonight and ask if they think that smoking hookah is dangerous. At least half the time I'll hear "no". No it is nonsense... because it IS SMOKING... I am sorry but I think that its awful that a lot of people need a slogan before they think something through. If we are going to do this, then we should also have surgeon general's warnings that knives might cut you, that you might choke on a hotdog, and as ghostofdavid said, that eating a burger at a restaurant might make you fat. Catering to the lowest common denominator is bad policy, and makes all of us dumber because of it.

QUOTE (Johnny_D @ Oct 26 2007, 07:53 AM) QUOTE (Bulldog_916 @ Oct 26 2007, 04:48 AM) There isnt a warning posted in hookah bars I've been to. There's no surgeon general's warning. Shouldnt people know what they are doing? You needed a sign to figure out you were smoking? JD Evidently... Wait hookah smoking is bad too!!?!?! CURSE YOU SURGEON GENERAL! Seriously though Bulldog, you're addicted to hookah?? That's pretty amazing to me, you I think would be the first that I've met... I can (and do) stop and restart all the time... Some days I will smoke 2-3 hours, some weeks 1 hour to 45 mins a day, and some weeks none at all. With the extremely low nicotine content, I have to wonder how exactly you DO get addicted...

11. Anyone Carry A Pistol?

QUOTE (mushrat @ Oct 20 2007, 12:09 PM) Just got my C&C permit this week. It's a very strange feeling being able to walk down the street wearing a gun... Anyone else carry? What do you carry?? I want to get one for myself... Course, the problem is finding something good for cc...
12. Anyone been there?? I just found out that it existed and am tempted to go give it a shot! Who knew, a hookah bar in central PA!
13. Right now I've got black coffee and soon some awesome mozzarella sticks... what do you like to eat while you smoke? Does anything go with the flavors well?? What's traditional?
14. Hookah Causes Cavities?

QUOTE (amnite @ Sep 11 2007, 02:56 PM) has anyone seen the study of peoples teeth from cigerette smokers and shisha smokers! At the end of the study they found a cigerette smokers teeth had worsened while a shisha smokers teeth remained the same LOL either hookah is better than cigs... or we like to brush more who knows lol
15. Hookah Causes Cavities?

As far as the original topic, yeah its entirely possible for nicotine and smoke to contribute to cavities... both are acidic and when acids are left on teeth they eat holes. Is there a real serious concern here though? No. Orange Juice is also acidic, and contributes to tooth decay... But on the OJ drinking boards there aren't people carrying on about the DANGEROUS DENTAL RISK of a glass of OJ with your breakfast (though I have been seeing some very stupid assed commercials discussing that very stupid assed idea that we should drink our OJ with a straw and not let it touch your teeth (all those people eating citrus to stave off disease are hosed, SUCKERS! lol) Of course when we get down to it at the end of the day there is a simple solution... good oral hygiene. If you are really concerned (like has been said numerous times above) a little toothpaste and a brush after a hookah session will solve most of the concerns.
