The Battle Royale For The Title Of The Highest Rated Hookah Tobacco

Recommended Posts

I was bored, apparently, and I started wondering what the average rating for a couple of brands of tobacco were (including Tangiers). So I ran averages. Its been about seven hours, now, so don't fault me if I made a mistake. I posted the totals at the current end of the brands I ran averages for. I also am tired enough that I'm not going to run the averages for a couple of worthy brands (2+ pages of reviews) now, but maybe later. This is purely for fun, and for informational purposes.

Here's the results:

EDITED TO ADD MORE BRAND AVERAGES 4/12/09

Tangiers Lucid 41 Reviews, Average 8.8/10

Also look at how many reviews each received.. that would explain why Epic and Hookah Freak are so high up.

yeah i agree as to why they are so high up.

Nak should be higher, easily top 3 ... AT LEAST! heh

Nice work Eric, but i think anything with less than 50-60 ratings should be DQ'd.

I agree with Matt, Nakhla should be within the top 3 or 4, preceded by the good ol tang. I was surprised by some of the brands that beat it.

Nice work Sonthert, took a lot of effort I'm sure.

Thanks for this... that's cool to know.

Makes me want to try some other brands... though they need to be DAMN good based on the price of some of them.

I, too, think Nahkla should be higher... I mean c'mon, its a great smoke with lots of flavor and you can't beat the price.

Whoa, that must have taken a while! Thanks for the hard work ohmy.gif

I think the deal with Nakhla is that the vast majority of the reviews were written long before the Nakhla Renaissance, when the baccy was thought to be cheap and sub-par. Hell, even I used to dislike it after finding out about other brands.

Anyway that's the ways the numbers appear. Just goes to show you that statistics don't mean jack.

edit: forgot to add that Tangiers is where it should be, but what happened to SOEX? tongue.gif

I beg to differ.

These results show some problems in the rating system..

Not enough people rated each tobacco. I think, for more accurate overall scores, you should pair all the tobaccos that got 300+ ratings with each other, then all 200s, 100s, 10s, etc. Too many unpopular tobaccos are rated higher than popular ones due to a lack of raters.

Like this:

Tangiers & Tangiers F-Line 219 Reviews, Average 8.52/10
Starbuzz 279 reviews, Average: 8.21/10
Al Fakher 301 Reviews, Average 7.56/10
Nahkla 224 Reviews, Average 7.49/10

Fantasia 131 Reviews, Average: 7.85/10
Layalina 158 Reviews, Average 7.69/10
Hookah Hookah 169 Reviews, Average: 6.60/10

I've only tried starbuzz and AF sad.gif sad.gif

What should I try next? Don't worry about price

Tangiers and Nakhla, if you are down for a buzz. Check out the reviews to see what people like. There are some good and not so good from both.

Differ with what? smile.gif Nice Work? Something less than 50-60 rating should be DQ'd? Why Epic ad Hookah Freak are so high up? laugh.gif

Erufiku:I think somebody said something about stickieding something...I'll get the glue...this time I'm stickying you to the top of the page.

I calculated Romman, Soex, Tonic, Potion, Pharoahs and Saalaam and added them to the chart.

This should be pretty much inclusive.

I though for about two minutes what should be the cut off should be, and I decided, based on the way the review pages were set up, it would be easiest to review brands with more than one page of reviews...or ones I was interested in. Notice that there are some brands with a relatively few reviews, but poor reviews.

I also noticed that some brands, especially ones with few reviews, but good averages, tend to have more suspicious reviews. A guy has five posts, three of them in the XYZ Brand reviews, the other posts being like "I like ice in my jar." How can we objectively take that into account...I don't think you can. I almost put down my estimate for the number of suspicious positive reviews, like "none", "A few", etc. I looked at Tangiers and there were some suspicious reviews posts, too. Since I know I'm not bribing trolls to post reviews, I can only believe that they are honest, and that other ones might be, too.

This is just for fun, its not serious...

YES! I WIN!

[shit...did I forget to erase that?]

this isnt even a realistic list. king molassel, afzal, hookah hookah, hookah freak ...all over 5? are you joking. no one gives tobaccos 1s and 2s...which is what they deserve

My problem with the results is that numerical ratings are so subjective that I and a few others I've noticed don't rate with a number but rather give purely descriptive opinions and experiences, so it's less an issue with the results and more an issue with no hard numbers due to such subjectivity (experience, hardware, skill level, bla bla bla) existing in a shisha review.

We should have one dude with an exeptional palate rate all the flavors of every brand out there, pro bono of course. I nominate me wink.gif

Also people tend not to review average or bad flavors as much as the good and great from what I've read.

However it's interesting to see the results, thanks for doing this Eric.

Sad that Nakhla is somehow lower than Epic, Layalina, and especially HF.
